Starfruit - about ready to throw in the towel

I have about a dozen 4-5" starfruit plants that were planted from seed in my classroom earlier this year. They've been under T5 grow lights about 16 hours/day since they sprouted, along with lots of other stuff, and I'm in the process of transitioning them over to being outside once school ends.

I took 3 home that were growing a few inches apart in a pot so that I wouldn't have to transplant just yet, and since they've been outside, the leaves remain bunched up, and the whole plant is turning so pale it's almost white. I have read you shouldn't fertilize these for several years because they have a tendency to shoot up and fall over from being too tall and skinny, so I'm hesitant to add any nitrogen.

Any thoughts? They're were in an area that was partial sun for about the first week, and for the past week and a half they've been in almost full sun all day. They're being watered consistently but are allowed to dry out a bit between waterings like they were in the classroom.
