VERY HARDY and seems to do very well propagating on its own. Just plant/transplant one or two in your yard and in a few weeks you will have more horseherb than you can know what to do with. Horseherb seems to thrive in hot Houston weather. This ground cover (or commonly known in Houston as a perennial weed) is so hardy, in fact, you can subject it to the severest of treatment and it will still come back to haunt you in exponential numbers, propagating and invading every square inch of dirt in your yard and every surrounding neighbors' yard: you can mow it, (better yet) scalp it, starve it, deprive it of water, beat it, wack it to the ground, poison it in 100-degree heat, smother it, and even curse at it. There's no killing it! Horseherb firmly roots, which makes it time consuming to weed by hand, digging it up by the root, but it's the only way to get rid of any strays that end up in your flower beds AND BELEIVE ME, YOUR FLOWER BEDS WILL REQUIRE MAINTANANCE DURING THE GROWING SEASON.

i bought m. cumingii a few months ago and also decided to roll over the dice and pick up the seeds they are arrived with. i squeezed the seed casing just as everyone did in the surface of the sterilized medium i used and sprayed deionized water each watering schedule. but because i became too busy with school, i forgot to maintain the moisture in their environmeent and forfeited the idea of propagating them. i also got a m. speciosa and decided to propagate it by stem cuttings and failed miserably, then settled to repot it and washed off the soil from its root system.(it's too bad that after that it promptly died because i disturbed its roots.) but that never ended there and i blood-mindlessly jerked another one, which is a m. myriantha. this time, i decided to use the cheapest, most reliable, and most water retentive medium, which is coco dust, and cautiously and quickly did i took it off its previous pot. now resting under the shade of my humble queen sago cycad, that small, compact, barely 1 foot tall m. myriantha has more than 15 racemes and still pushing growth.(if not for the cursed mealy bugs, it would have more.) and the m. cumingii is growing uncontrollably. (i've heard tell it grows as a small tree in the wild.) i consider the medinilla do best in larger pots despite their nature in the wild as i observe from the ones i have without disregarding the environment where they are in. (though, they are relatively new to me.)

there is a plant propogation book i have wherein the author describes his own mist system. that author has a large black coil of hose in the roof of his greenhouse so that water can be heated before reaching the mist nozzles. that's at least one vote for using warm water and keeping the cuttings reasonably warm as they root. just thought i would toss that in! lol. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by: mosaic z8 LA (My Page) on Sun, May 11, 03 at 11:59 With such a setup you could probably root roses under mist all winter here in Louisiana. I believe the idea behind the pattern was/is actually to help prevent water run-off when doing overhead watering by allowing the water to soak in between the on phases. I bought this particular timer though because when I looked at it my mind said "Ah! Mist!" (heh), even though the reason I bought it at the time was to keep a new patch of zoysia sod watered until it rooted in. My batteries did last all season last year, but it was only opening that valve 4x a day for 3 weeks, and then 1x every 4 days for a couple of months. And even though I had a pressure regulator on there, I kept having a problem with the heads blowing off! (Their drippers work perfectly by the way so it's nothing against the company) I ordered foggers from Misty Mate this year and they put out a super fine fog. Perfect for propagation. They are a litte more expensive than the ones from Dripworks but worth it. And if you ask they will ship the misting heads for $1.50. I went to HD and bought a 10-24 tap and drill set (3.00) and drilled holes in my 1/2" cvpvc and the heads just screwed right in! I bought a Melnor timer at HD for $39 and it has 1 minute spray options so I've got it set for 1 minute every 10 minutes. Can't remember the model number but it's not the one on the HD website. I hope to finish my new propagation box soon. I built one on a stand this year so I can move it around easily. Wouldn't you know, HD has plastic sheeting made just for greenhouses that I used! It's not the real thick heavy stuff either. It's only 4mil and is crystal clear see-thru! Hopefully I'll be finished this week!

Hi Gardenbear, I can't believe yours still has a few flowers, that's great! I really hope mine will bloom for me this year... My 'myriantha' is planted in the ground and is doing very well. I have it in my mulched area...its mostly florida soil which I'm sure has mostly sand in it. I do add red mulch on those flower beds almost yearly...and it seems to thrive there so far. I just make sure the red mulch is several inches away from the trunk. My cuttings I took rooted nicely...it took about 6-8 weeks to get nice roots and I added it to the same pot.
