my china-town haul

stopped by china town today and bought the following

longons- $4 a pound- taste -7/10

jakfuit- $3.50 for about 7 segments- best jak fruit ive had to date- taste 7.5 out of 10. email me if you want seeds.

madamme franchis mango- very nice looking - havent tasted yet. $2 each (a little pricy as the season is just beginning)

champagne mango- 50c each- nice looking

sapodilla- about $5 for 2 fruit- havent tasted yet.

they also had dragon fruit $4 a pound but I find them to be very bland so I never buy them.

I called a mangosteen importer and was told that mangosteen will hit NY in 2 weeks. Lychees should follow around the same time.

in early august there should be, longan, dragon fruit, terrible lychees from china, good jackfruit, mediocre rambutan, and some decent mangosteen. the best period for chinatown fruit is late may to early july where they have insanely delicious lychees from florida, really good mangosteen from thailand, plus all the other fruit listed for august.

Marlene, no I don't mind you sneaking a peek...LOL I do need to update those pixs though :) Sprout, thanks for the tip on the teapot tops :) I'll remember that when I do make teapot totems. I've got too many irons in the fire right now! I want to play with all my new junk, but I'm trying to finish my first shutter birdhouse and I've got to stop everything long enough sit down and plan my only granddaughter's 2nd birthday cake for the 19th, so I can get the fondant made in advance as it's easier to work with after it sits for a couple of days.

Believe me those Gold Standards were from Stacy's and they were infected. I work for a company that is a vendor to Home Depot and Lowes. Home Depot depends on marketing companies that service several departments within the store. So, the vendor rep that you see in the paint department may also take care of other departments. They often do the work that you would think HD employees should do. They usually have large territories and I should not say that everyone of them is like this, but it is common that they do their job as fast as possible and leave, doing just the basic work. The people that I spoke to at the Home Depot probably did not work for Stacy's, but are more likely to be a contractor for Stacy's. They told me point blank that they did not know much about hostas or HVX and they were working as fast as possible to get the product on the tables. Every now and then you can find a big box store employee that has very good knowledge of the products in their department. Of those that I have spoken to in the garden department of Lowes and Home Depot, all have extremely little knowledge of hostas and much less knowledge of HVX.

Simon: These Hak Ip lychees all have the small "chicken tongue" seed. As far as shipping......not right now. I don't have the time to do all the packing and posting. Maybe later on in the season. Gary: Lychees taste like lychees. Silly of you to ask. They are sweet with a sub acid under current reminiscent of a very fleshy grape but much more exotic in flavor. If it were me, I would go to a place that sells moving supplies (Half Price Boxes, U-Haul stores). I have seen boxes and tpe at HD or Lowes, but not the specialty boxes and other supplies. I used supplies from Half Price Boxes here when I moved my son to grad school. He didn't have enough to need a dish barrel, but you might. The dish barrel is stronger than the average box -- double walled, I think. I used bubble wrap on the bottom plus clean newsprint (the clean stuff you buy is better gread and have more body so it goes further and offers more protection than printed newpapers -- at least what I've seen in recent years. They use cheaper paper than they used to. The store suggested using sheet foam to wrap the dishes rather than bubble wrap. The weight of the dishes can pop bubbles, sespecially atthe edges where they need the most protection. I used clean newpaper inside bowls, cups and around handles and the foam between individual plates and bowls as well as to wrap groups of plates, bowls and individual cups. The sheet foam was in perforated sheets and it really went fast and easy. Start with plates vertically on the bottom, then bowls and then serving pieces and cups typically on top -- dense to least dense bottom to top so you don't crush cup handles, lids, etc. Pay attention to how you turn those cup handles and make sure you use more paper to layer in between bundles and box edges to secure and prevent any edges from banging. If everything is cushioned and secure, nothing should shift sgnificantly and everything should arrive just as you packed it -- short of dropping the box down the stairs or something. Maybe even then. My son's boxes all looked liek they did when I sealed them and they were laoded, unloaded, moved into storage, reloaded, moved 1800 miles and then transferred to a shuttle for delivery.

Do you know what is usually available in august? I am heading up to NY in early august and was hoping to get to china town to see what was available.

The Annonas are also available in the stalls there on Canal such as Sweetsop and Custard Apple(Reticulata) in and around August...

Thanks for the info LL, I am not too worried about lychees. I should be able to get plenty of those down here. Glad to here there will be some Rambutan and mangosteen though. I have never been to china town so it should be an interesting experience.

js- dont expect too much from the rambutan- very bland. I ate them fresh from several different trees in puerto rico and they were no better. mangosteen on the other hand- wow- they r world class. the only problems with the ones from china town is that only about half the fruit in a bag are good- the rest have suffered damage during their shipment from thailand and are no longer good. the good ones r amazing though.

Nice haul there LL, sounds like a wonderful fruit-in.

I will humbly disagree about the rambutan, I thought they were pretty good and could easily eat more now. Mangosteen was definitely better though.

The mangosteens there in NYC"CT" aren't fresh if you are going there to buy them, they are bundled frozen in plastic netted bags and then thawed and put in the stalls... some of the "gourmet" stores might have a few fresh but they are expensive and in the case of the "gourmet" stores Rambutan, dried out and old. Check the stems...

LL, That is something I wanted to ask you, how can you tell the fresh mangosteen from the frozen? I know the ones you buy are fresh, but I do think I remember you mentioning that a lot of places sell frozen.

Check the color of the stems, and for the most part fresh have a vibrant green color while frozen are dingy dark green to black...

tropicaliste- china town used to sell only frozen mangosteen but for the last 3 years, fresh mangosteen can be imported into the US and they now absolutely sell fresh mangosteen in china town. i have spoken to the importers and distributers and am 100% certain they r "fresh". having said that, about half the fruit in a given bag are ruined from gabage.
ethan- come on- we got a box of rambutan and after we ate a handful, no one really touched them. the mangosteen on the other went in a couple of days

I think I have to agree with Gerry here.....Rambutans are OK, but on the bland side when compared to lychee, longan, and pulasan....nevermind mangosteen. Even more of an issue with me is the way the rambutan seed clings to the flesh and almost always gives you a rather unpleasant partial seed encounter in the flesh as you eat it. That being said, they sure do look interesting on the tree and on your plate.

I'll go again the nexttime that the season is in, I haven't been in a while but I've been since the import restriction from Thailand was lifted and still have only seen the netted pre-frozen bags, I remember the big to-do in the NYT when I lived there about Mangosteens so I'm glad they are easier to come by. The stall on the corner of the taipan bakery usually has the best selection, other stall recommendations?

tropicaliste, i think my fave stall is at the corner of canal and mulberry but im not sure if thats the corner- it could be mott- she has the largest stand of any of the canal st stands. but i always check the other stalls as she is usually a little more expensive than the other stalls- i just walk up canal from center st to where the citibank is- about 300 yards and check the selection and price then i walk back down again and do the buying. maybe you saw the frozen bags out of season. season will begin in a couple of weeks and last thru most of august.
