Hi John, Sorry you're struggling w/ this. Well there lots of folks here way more knowledgeable than I about Jades, but here's a start. Pls. cut off all shriveled up, dry growth, it's dead or dying & won't come back. Anything black is rot & should also be cut back. Anything soft &/or mushy is also rot & should also be cut off. In your last pic, that new soil looks too peaty, if you have no other faster draining ingredients, I'd start over, adding at least 30% perlite to break that up. It's just too peaty. If these were mine, I'd start over completely, by taking the whole thing apart, discarding thin & spindly growth (it won't recover). I'd scale down to smaller pots (less roots need less room). I'd separate the very good growth from the medium OK growth & repot them, in better mix & smaller pots each preferably clay. Let's see what other folks have to say.

OK - here it is repotted and trimmed. I watered it the day before. (I believe it has enough water because when I cut some branches they were very moist at the cut.) I broke apart the root ball. Some of the branches came apart at the roots so when I repotted I just combined the pieces. How does it look? Do I need to cut more? I am using string to keep them bunched close together because of the shallow roots. Will this be ok or should I get that plant tape? Finally, if you have a suggestion for a light bulb/system please let me know. Thanks Jim

Congrats on the bloom. Mine finally went this year, right after I had just about given up since Bihai's was blooming and it looked like mine would not. I had eleven bloom clusters which I was very happy with since it had not bloomed ever before. Mine was grown from seed so I had no idea how long it would take. Gary, I am not sure it would help at this point, and maybe the cold was just too much, but I think heliconias come back a little slower. Something I found is that heliconias that get affected by cold become susceptible to fungus, especially the rhizome. Of course it is not visible so it would be easy to miss. I have taken on the policy of spraying with a good fungicide after a colder than normal spell that I think might have knocked the heliconias back. The one I use is called phyton, it is copper based, but I have been told it is systemic. I'll spray the leaves and drench the soil too. The nice thing about the phyton is it appears to be safe for some copper sensitive plants like orchids and bromeliads. Since then, my post winter losses have greatly diminished. Looks like the soil is too dry....maybe too much sunlight. Where is the plant located? Direct sun is hard on them also. I've had great success with mine on the front porch, that only receives filtered morning sun. How often do you water them? How much sunlight do they receive? When you repotted them what type of soil did you plant them in? They like a sandy-type loam. Did you move the location of the pot? Tammy in Indiana
