need help with Tree ID (pictures)

This plant sprouted from a seed I found in a South Florida, it is about 2 years old.

Drops its leaves in the cold months.

The leaves have 6 and 8 leaflets, not hairy,

are stiff but not fleshy or leathery

and when crushed there is no smell

there is no center leaflet at the tip.

No red color in young leaves.

Hawthorn get big spur-like thorns while various ribes get much smaller and more numerous thorns and tend to be "prickly" - Although I'm sure there are varieties of each bred to have no thorns. Looking for the thorns may help you in your identification. FataMorgana

Just checked up, Shellbark Hickory only gets into NY, not native in CT, so that one is unlikely unless deliberately planted. Shagbark Hickory is native in CT. Note that it only gets its namesake shaggy bark when older; young trees have smooth bark as you describe. Resin

Thank you so much. At least this gives me something to go on to find out about planting them. i am really wanting to make one big container/bed and to top dress with something like lava rocks. And wanting to do a pond or water container nearby. Just something different and interesting. Some annona relative, maybe a Cananga odorata, ylang ylang.

Also very well could be Annona squamosa, A. glabra, (sugar apple or pond apple)

Where was the seed, other than south Florida, a garden a park, near a ditch along side a road?

Alan, I picked up the seed at the Edison Ford Garden Estate by Ft. Meyers. The seed reminded me of a chestnut, but not as big, flatter and smooth brown. Eyecatching, or else I would have never picked it up.
I did compare the leaves with online pictures of the ylang ylang, but thats not it.

I looked at all my Annonas and Ylang Ylang, and although they "do" look somewhat similar, my plants have leaves that do not attach directly opposite each other on the branch, they are spaced slightly irregularly. Plus, they all have new leaves at the tips of every branch, unlike yours which end in a blank.

Didn't Edison collect all kinds of unusual plants in his attempt to make rubber?

I wonder if a call to the museum would provide a list of plants on the grounds?

I'd really like to know this one!

Abendwolke pointed out, quite correctly, that her plant has compound leaves with 6 to 8 leaflets and no terminal leaflet. This rules out avocadoes and everything in the Annona family, including ylang ylang, all of which have simple leaves.

I don't recognise this tree, but my best guess is some legume in subfamily Caesalpiniaceae. Many members of this subfamily have paripinnate leaves like this.
