They look good...be sure to do a thorough scale check on them. It's better to kill them all now than to wait too long.

My hak ip from Jene's had an odd looking type scale...at least that's what I thought it was. Black, long, and thin. Found a few on the bark but most was tucked in along the mid rib of a leaf.

NTM...wanted your opinion on this since I don't want a repeat of my sweetheart! Mine is flushing big-time but also losing some older leaves. They will start to yellow and then will drop at slightest bump/touch. Pissing me off. I know lychees will drop leaves but I'm concerned that there may be something deficient. Have any of yours lost leaves in this manner?

Jay- Every one of my trees has lost leaves that way. They definitely have a defined lifespan. I'm going to guess that the lifespan is between 6 months to a year. Just make sure the new leaves turn dark green (hak ip = "black leaf") when they harden off (after a few months), or you might have a deficiency.
I found 3 types of scales on mine from the nurseries. Jay, you're describing banana scales above, and they start out a yellowish color...had these on my sweetheart, I also have rosette (I think) on my Emperor...they look like dark brown turtle shells, and the third was a round, flat, yellowish-transparent type on my mango...under the leaves.

That scale is really nasty and persistent. My langsats have a scale that matches the bark 100%...right down to mimicking the bumps and imperfections of the bark.

As long as it's pushing new growth every few months, you'll be fine.
I've come to hate scales after getting these trees, but at least they are manageable for now.

Maybe the damage just isn't noticeable in the pictures, but I don't see anything wrong with the leaves on your sweetheart lychee, lycheeluva; it's a little gangly, but that's to be expected in a container tree.

Oh, and Jay, I agree with NTM - until they get well established, I've found that young lychees lose their older leaves almost immediately following a flush. Even a healthy tree will only have leaves last for a few months.

Thanks for the positiveness guys! I need it. I'm still a little gunshy over losing the sweetheart. I guess I should stop cussing the tree now everytime I see a yellow leaf.

Lycheeluva, what made you decide to go with the Fairchild variety? I went back and forth myself between that and Cogshall but decided on Cogshall since a lot has been written about it. The Fairchild sounds good with its disease resistance and being from hot and humid Panama which might make it a better choice in a greenhouse. I've got that one on my list as my next choice if I can squeeze another one in.

as for the fairchild- it was basicly a tossup between it and the cogshall- i think pine island rated the faircild slightly higher

Lychees were on my list to order but I decided to wait on them till I went down to Florida for the group get together. Do some taste tasting before I decide which to get. :-)

Very nice trees lycheeluva...I can't wait till my sweetheart starts fruiting. I planted it 12 months ago, had some blooms, but every one fell off , darn. On a brighter note, Its doubled in size , so that's good at least. Enjoy your new trees...

Puglvr1, if I remember your sweetheart pics, they were a classic example of just how beautiful the canopy of this variety can be. I'd love to see a recent pic.

Lycheeluva, your trees look fine in the pictures. What a nice size Alfonso! I wish mine would stop blooming and start growing. Most of my mango trees seem stuck at the blooming stage, and aren't growing. I've pulled off all but one or two of the tiny fruit set.
Puglvr1, your trees are growing so well in the ground. I miss my lychee trees too. It's not yet time to start again.

ALTA- I think the Non-florida gardeners among us are going to find it a little difficult to summon sympathy for your awful problem of abundant blooming!
