Mangos begining to blooms in SoCal
Comments (60)Zands - and that be would be cool if i had the Carabao, Phillipine SUPER mango, but mine look smaller don't you think? Not as elongated as in your picture... Ashley - maybe I'll call it Wilddog - my new mango hybrid! Anyone have contact info for the Federal Patent office ! (lol). But do let me know, with comments and pictures, how your Manila looks as it fruits - I'm super curious to see your results - maybe this summer???? Mango K - Manila is the ONLY mango Lowes/HD offers at their stores here in So Cal, so there's no chance for a mislabeling unless it happened at LaVerne's before it was shipped, cuz you can special order other varietals from them (but through Lowes), which I did (I think a Glenn and something else) but they were just crappy sticks so I got my money back.....but yeah anything's possible - I suppose I could look at the other varieties LaVerne offers (like 7-8 others) and go to the PIN viewer and see maybe if one of those mangos comes up looking close to mine.....hmmmm..... Oh...and thanks Harry for the steady faith in the Edwards Mango, which I just spent $160 on to get a big tree and plant. As you say the consensus is it is a fabulous tasting mango......can't wait for one this year....oh, just can't wait...... MangoDogDroolingInTheDesert...See MoreManila Mango Tree Pruning Advice
Comments (34)Mother Nature "pugged" my Mango in 2012. Svp.You ever thought of taking off that thinner lower left branch? It would make the tree a perfect single trunk. Mine came back triple trunked...and I'm waiting for the day when cutting it to one still leaves a good sized plant. My climate is not very warm..so replacement growth is slow- compared to the rest of this board in Fla,soucal,Az. I'm in the SF bay area....See MoreMango Tasting......Ivory Mango
Comments (8)Sorry for torturing you Gary.....actually, by this time in the season I start to have mango-itis. That's inflamation caused by eating too many mangoes. Not really, but there does come a point when I start to get "mangoed out." JF: Lancetilla was quite good. It ranked in the middle of the pack for the mangoes we were tasting that particular day. You have to remember, the mango trees I purchased over the years have all been rated "excellent" for eating/flavor quality or they have been raved about by someone I thought had sufficient mango knowledge/experience for me to rely on their judgment and go get that particular variety. If I were ranking the tasting table we had that day as pictured, the Dot was a good solid 9.5 (that is about as good as a rating as I give as I think there always has to be some hope left in one's mind that there still could be a mango somewhere that is even better). I would rate the Valencia Pride, Ivory and Lancetilla hovering in the 8.5-9.0 area. The Kent and Golden Lippens were solid 8.5's and the unknown mango and Gold Nuggett brought up the rear as hovering between 8.0 and 8.5. I use the hovering rating method as different parts of a particular mango can actually be better/worse than other parts. For reference, I rank Ataulofo (Champagne) mangoes that you can readily buy in the store as varying between 4.0 to around 6.0 on their best day. Tony (SWRancher) brought up a point in another thread about the Ivory mango possibly being the same as Tog Bi Con (which I also have). I bought it at the Broward RFVC sale about 1 1/2 years ago. It was one of the very few mango trees (of any size) that did not bloom this year. By not blooming, it really had a very nice growth spurt and I'll see next year what the fruit looks like on it. I bought the tree because Murray Corman (Garden of Delights) said that it was an excellent, very sweet mango....very late and looked kind of like a banana. Here's the leaves on the two for comparison. Tog Bi Con: From July 22, 2011 Ivory: From July 22, 2011 Not sure one can draw any definite conclusions....but I certainly cannot exclude the possiblity that they are the same. Comments (132)this is my Florigon i got the seed from someone in Fla a couple of years ago. its growing very nicely, but is getting large for the container. it will go in ground in the spring. i am putting it close to the house on a south wall, in hopes it will last next winter. i havbe about 8 seedlings, most from Ataulfo/champagne from the store bought fruit, but, also have Neelum and Coconut cream. i will wait till those get larger, but a few of the Ataulfo are in ground, in hopes of a miracle that they survive this winter... if one does, there is a very good chance it will survive the next few winters, unless we get a really hard freeze which does happen every few years. the climate here is a bit strange... i would say out of a 10 year span, we will get 3 years of no freeze, ... another 3 or 4 of just hitting 29 to 32F, one or 2 hitting 27F and maybe one below that at 24 or 25F. i am thinking on those days i can build a box around it with a frost cloth. being near the house helps a lot with the bricks re-radiating heat at night. ... so ... to me, a seedling that can be 3 degrees F more hardy, can mean the world in the chance of getting fruit one day....See Morestanofh 10a Hayward,Ca S.F. bay area
