My Manila and Julie Mango tree....
Comments (11)The first several months to a year are very critical for small mango/any fruit trees. You should make sure the soil does not dry out for extended periods as this can stunt a young mango trees growth. I recommend innoculating your soil with beneficial bacteria and fungi and avoid adding chemical N-P-K fertilizers as this will inhibit the growth of the beneficial organisms in your soil. Make sure to add lots of organic compost and maybe just a hint of well composted cow/steer manure. You don't want to add to much manure even if it is well composted because it can still be "Hot" and burn your plants. Adding Earthworms and other garden worms will make your plant thrive. The organic way may not be the fastest way to spur growth but in the long run, your plant will be much healthier. You may also want to transplant your trees to a slightly larger pot every 4-6 months depending on how fast it grows. Mangoes grow really fast when it is super hot. If you want to take advantage of this and you really want to use chemical fertilizers but are afraid of killing your beneficial organisms and scareing away the worms, you can always do a foliar spray of chem fertilizer...See MoreMango Tree Pruning

Then use these instructions to post the picture. You will add the address of the picture at Photobucket where indicated in the instuctions you find in the link I attached. When you get to Step 3, I suggest you use option 2....it was the easiest to understand for me.Once you get the hang of it, you are just pasting the web address of each picture into a brief programming statement. Good luck. Its not hard...just a bit tedious. Here is a link that might be useful: How to display a picture within your post...See MoreGrafted Mango pruning advice
Comments (2)HI! Are you in Hawaii? What city? The "how zit" gave it away, lol. What type of mango tree do you have? Well, I'm not an expert.. I just bought my very first mango tree and planted it on Father's Day, but I can tell you that I've watched several pruning videos on YouTube. I would suggest that you get on Youtube and watch many videos- every video has some advice you can probably learn from. Here's a video with some advice on how to keep a mango tree small. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EGgak52674...See MoreWhere to prune 1 year old mango tree?
Comments (20)Hey there Mango mango, I was actually just responding to your question above since I haven't been on this thread for a couple weeks. To answer your question, pruning should be done after harvest of the fruit. I see it all the time- mango trees are as big as dinosaurs here and many people prune vigorously after the summer is over and after harvest. Here's a link which discusses pruning and answers the question: http://lee.ifas.ufl.edu/AgNatRes/Pubs/Pruning_Mango_Trees.pdf Also, I'm far from being an expert on soils- or any other gardening topic for the matter- but I took the advice of a neighbor and used a combination more or less of this mix: 40% natural soil from my backyard, 40% specialized Hawaii potting soil, and about 10% gravel and perlite. I know it seems weird to use bagged potting soil instead of bagged garden soil, but my neighbor said that this mix would be beneficial for its added nutrients. I topped it off with some mulch, but the area needs work because so much grass is growing in the area....See Moresvbcaz
