Is Hilo Beauty a colocasia or an alocasia?
Comments (1)My experience leads me to the conclusion the the "Hilo Beauty" is a Colocasia, not an Alocasia. Morphologically, in every respect that I have examined, this plant matches Colocasia far more than it does Alocasia. The only other possibility I can imagine is that it is a Caladium, or is a possible hybrid between Caladium and Colocasia. If I could see what the inflorescence is like, I could be much more definitive. LariAnn Here is a link that might be useful: Aroidia Research...See MoreDoes Colocasia Macrorhiza Bloom?
Comments (18)susan, I would love to hear from some on this forum regarding the PROPER way to hand pollinate, but the way i do it is to find 2 different flowers, one just beginnning its cycle, (characterized by fontanesii's strong papaya like scent),and the other on past this stage, to the point of pollen being shed off of the male portion of the spadix (usu. @ 1-3 days after the female portion of the spadix emits its scent, and the spathe opens up), take a brush (or whatever type of primitive pollinator stick you've got :-) and deftly brush the lower portion of the spadix of the female active flower with the pollen from the other flower. you will have to remove a portion of the spathe w/ a razor in order to get at that portion of the inflorescence. i am making MANY assumptions that this is the right way to do this. again, any info or links regarding this would be welcome. fuzz...See MoreAnyone have a picture of Colocasia 'Nancyana', 'Nancy's Revenge'
Comments (6)They sometimes have the stripe even when very young. I am not sure whether its age or season that makes the stripe appear sooner or later. The picture I am attaching shows a mature stand with plants that are about 4 1/2 ft tall, overall individual leaves measure about 12+ inches. But I also have potted pups from this same plant that are only 2-3 leaves and only stand about 12-15 inches and are already sporting a distinct stripe. Could the development of the stripe be related somehow to day-length? More hours of sun, stripe develops late, shorter days, stripe develops early?...See MoreDoes anyone grow alocasia or colocasia ?
Comments (16)Thank you Shawn..o thats much easier, lol. I did see them in the park's catalgue, but I just get tortured by those catalogues. I looked at the one I got last week with one eye, like I was watching a horror movie, lol. I can't afford it right now. If they have a free shipping promo goin then thats dif, lol. It's the shipping that kills me. I'd rather try and get it around here than have to pay shipping. I am hoping HD or Lowe's will get them, I'm the same way, need to see it. Nothin worse than ordering a plant and getting a crappy lil half dead thing delivered to your door. Daniella...See MoreDave in NoVA • N. Virginia • zone 7A
