Growing Tomatoes

growing from seed already...want to buy some transplants

anyone recomend a good place to order transplants? I want to get a few plants. I need some quick growing good size transplants. Not too expensive if possible.

I am already winter sowing some. I need a few transplants this year to supplement. I just don't have the space or time right now to take care of indoor seedlings.

I saw some plants on the site below. Anyone have any recomendations?

No local nurseries or other plant sources?

For online sources I recommend selectedplants.com

Darrel always has an excellent selection of varieties but you'll need to get your order in ASAP.

Some plants seem to do best with a longer season which you can get by starting them indoors and transplanting, others are hard to get started outdoors in our cooler climate and hard to maintain soil moisture. For these, I start them earlier indoors or buy from a green house--tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower. The cole crops handle frost well, so they will go right out into the garden the first of May or as soon after that as I can get them out and I have water. They seem to establish well and take off with the cooler weather. The tomatoes and peppers will typically wait until Memorial Day or into June as they don't do much until the cooler spring weather patterns shift to the warmer summer pattern. I plant onion sets as early as possible, they do very well with the cool weather. Radishes and carrots also do well early. Peas like cool weather, but I have fewer problems with seed and root rots if I wait and plant them with the beans. The frost sensitive plants will get direct sown anywhere from around May 10th to June 10th, depending on time and how the weather is shaping up--whether it acts like cool, early spring or like it wants to warm up for summer. They will usually take 7-10 days to come up, which for a mid-May planting gets them to that last frost date and I figure I can replant if we do get a bad frost that takes them out--although when they have just come up and are very close to the warmer ground they seem to handle a light frost. This includes the beans, corn (corn could go in around the first of May, but comes up better and faster if I wait a bit longer), potatoes, squashes, cucumbers, cantaloupe, and watermelons. Never been able to successfully transplant a watermelon, cantaloupe get set back enough that the direct-sown ones always outperform. I've had volunteer squash come up in early May, so feel pretty safe planting them in mid to late May. I also only start the plants that go into the garden in relatively small numbers. The idea of trying to transplant a couple hundred corn plants or hairlike seedling onions just doesn't excite me.

For what it is worth: I grew under lights-various florescent fixtures with both cw and ww bulbs. Then I got a couple of fixtures you put abouve a cabinet in a bathroom. 4 bulb type and mounted those above a shelf. Then I put in those 13w spiral florescent bulbs and the plants loved them. They hung down amongst the seedlings as they got bigger or I lowered the shelves as they grew. This year I will do winter sowing right.( Won't go into last years attempt other than to say 'if all else fails follow the directions'. My bad.

Attempting to grow lemons from seed, having some problems

Hmmm. I am by no means an expert so if someone more autohoritative comes along I suggest you try their advice in lieu of mine. Having said that, I have a 5 foot lemon tree that I grew from a seed from a grocery store lemon that is a great healthy plant. So I have some suggestions based on anecdotal evidence. First, my 2 cents is take it easy on the miracle grow. A seedling does not need fertilizer. Just start the seed in some good potting soil. Even a mild fertilzer will probably hurt the plant. You have to resist the urge to do things to improve them, they are designed to do fine without you. I dont think yu need to worry about soil PH at this point. As for why your seedlings died, its probably the environment inside, your tendency to burn the plant with N-P-K or a combination of those. Is it too dry, inadequate light etc. Id just keep them in a sunny sindow sill and keep the soil moist (dont fertilize) and wait till spring to put back outside. Im sure you know citrus is not cold tolerant so wait until frost damage passes. Also someone on this forum more knowledgeable than I told me when I was in your position that a citrus tree started from seed may take several years to flower and or fruit. Smaller trees from a nursery are propagated from cuttings and have mature tree characteristics and will fruit when they are much smaller than yours. So if you dont want to wait 4 or 5 years just go buy one. If you want to experience growing one with your own two hands, resist the urge ot do too much.

Ashley: Carrots are notoriously slow to germinate. I plant them in my garden each year. It can take up to 15 days before they are up and visible. Be patient when growing carrots. I also find they are real slow growing for me once they do germinate for the first 1/2 of the season. I often wonder if they are going to amount to anything, then they always surprise me with how much root and shoot growth I get in August/September when they start sizing up nicely. Everything I planted in my garden in late may is growing well, big and looking good except my carrots. They just sit there for weeks on end and now are just starting to get some height. I know by Late September they will be good for harvest. I think eating carrots fresh picked are truly amazing in flavor. While they do store well for me in the refrigerator, nothing beats eating them very shortly after picking. Such a nice intense carrot flavor.

I grow most of mine from seed but purchased a few from Hirts Garden. The plants were serviceable but nothing to write home about. Shipping was combined but not cheap. I think shipping was something like $ 15.99 for four 4 packs of small plants. Then my local Lowe's got stock in of a lot of really good sized heirloom Tomato and Pepper plants. I could have gotten them cheaper if I had waited and purchased them all at Lowe's.

I don't buy tomato plants anymore. I grow everything from seed. I've had an infestation of spidermites from an online vendor and blight from big box stores. If you do buy plants check them well for pests and keep them quarantined from your other plants for at least 2 weeks while watching for any signs of virus or disease they could have.

Taz, very wise words, my wife and I know from experience the bad things that can happen just touching tomato plants in box stores, much less bring some home. If you buy from them you will, not if, bring home the uglys that wont go away. If I didnt start em then there not allowed on my property....

I am trying to germinate/grow my own. But for the starter I have bough a 4-pack($2.25) from PIKES, repoted in 1/2 gal pots(less than 60 cents/plant). When they grow roots in pot, then I plant them in the garden. These are labeled PINK GIRL. I did a search and learned that it is an "OK" tomato.
I do this every year, b/c I dont have a greenhouse and dont like caring and growing inside the house, under light.
It is too much work. We have a long and hot growing season and I can even direct sow tomatoes.

Here's another vote for Selected Plants. Darrel will often have plants of varieties that you can only get seeds for from other places. Great selection, great customer service. I have ordered from him more than once before we got a setup going so we can grow our own from seed.

I found a nursery not too far away I will try.

Maybe I will order something specila from Select plants.

cippoli that is prob a pretty far drive for me. Gas alone lately would not make it worth it... (I am 50 miles SW of chicago)
