Will caesalpinia pulcherrima die back in zone 10?

I have 2 new caesalpinia pulcherrima (Pride of Barbados)that I am ready to plant, but read that they must be heavily pruned in winter because they die back. Will I need to do this in zone 10? Anybody out there growing this in Southern CA? I am also trying to figure out how large this will get and if they have any special needs.

They only die back with a freeze, so won't happen where you are. They can get 10' - 20'. Very easy to grow, like lots of sun

i agree with the other post.it loses its leaves in winter,and some stems do die back a little,but other than that it gets taller and wider every year
mine is 15 x 15 after 5 years in culver city!,its in flower now

I never trim my gilliesii, but here's what a phoenix reference recommends for pulcherrima: In the early spring, after the danger of frost has passed, you should cut this shrub back to 6 to 12 inches above the ground. As soon as the weather heats up, it will explode into growth, growing to 5 to 6 feet tall and wide in one summer. Deep, weekly irrigation during the bloom season will keep plants healthy and prolong the flower display. It performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. So... Hi I grow both these but in 10 florida . Both make great pot subjects i suspect both will not survive a hard freeze but frost is no problem I grow them in pots to control the spread and size . in pots you could always bring them in and summer outdoors gary

Hi Have never tried cuttings as the seeds germinate very easily in fact too easily so they pop up all over the yard lol I keep them in a pot to control the size they flower consistantly at under two feet and almost all year gary

Hello Gary/others, can you tell me which you think is the most hardy and smallest of the Caesalpinia varieties please as I am trying get one to grow over here in the UK? Read online that C. Gillesii may fit my requirements? any advice? I think they are stunning plants after seeing them in full flower in Singapore. (Delonix Regia), Royal Poincianas I think they must have been in this case. Saw packets of D. Regia seeds on holiday in Lanzarote and HAD to buy them and have a go, OK yes, I realised at the time it would be a absolute miracle if I grew one above an inch in height but I am unable to resist the temptation!!! Anyway they germinated easily and I can get them to around a foot or so before winter sets in but can't get them to hold leaves over winter, realise temps too cold here even in g/h etc. Told Caesalpinias may be better option as they are more cold hardy and can flower in pots which is what I need?? Any info appreciated, thanks in advance. Gill.
