Miracle fruit leaves turning reddish with brown tips?

Any ideas why my miracle fruit plant could be doing this?

It was green...it came with slightly brown tips (a month ago), but its gotten worse and now has leaves turning reddish.

Thanks for any help/suggestions!

I cannot log onto the link you provided. My plant occassionally has leaves turn mottled red/yellow and then drop. I believe that to be natural. If more than just a few leaves are turning, then there is another issue.

Did you replant after receiving? If so, is your soil very low in PH? Getting plenty of light and water? What about humidity? These plants like a lot of humidity. Might try putting a tray of water filled with rocks beneath the container...or enclosing the entire plant in clear plastic. Any small insects on the underside of the leaves? If you have just received it, it may be a reaction stress reaction from the shipping and new environment.

Hi! Thanks for the reply. I waited about 2 weeks to replant it (the leaves were already having more brown tips and all so I thought it might help). The soil I used was 50% peat moss, 25% vermiculite, 25% Perlite. I've had the plant for a month. I don't see any bugs. I have it in a "greenhouse" type setting (or as close as I could think up)- with a clear plastic shower curtain enclosing it in a box (with my seeds that need to grow) and a warm mist vaporizer (that I turn off and on to keep humidity up) and a full spectrum floresant grow light. Should it be over the shipping stress and get better by now?

Ed, It is just apples and oranges. Your plants wake up in May in zone 5? So you have May through September of good growth. Here the plants wake up in mid February and grow through December so we double your growing days so our pruning just does not work for you. I have grown them in NW PA and here in Florida so know both worlds. Here things just grow quicker, is like we get two years in one. Just prune when dormant. If you want to pinch when the plants are growing do so but it will cost you fruit that next year so do some each year or just worry about growth for the first few years...that is really the best thing to do, though I know it is hard. Just take your satisfaction from the growth. Do everything you can during that growing season to maximize growth. Fertilize on schedule and I would apply foliar fertilizer as well, weak once a week during your season and don't miss the underside of the leaves. Here if we screw up or get lazy it does not matter nearly as much as it does up north. It took me 10 years up north to get big head high bushes....here 3 years and just as tall as 10 years up north though not quite as wide by 3 years.

seems like the wrong forum for this question but; Could be several reasons, too cold, too hot, too many ferts, too little ferts, too much sun, not enough sun etc. If it is in a pot it will be a challenge. What type of squash and how old and how big and how many leaves? It sounds like it needs ot go in the ground and just given a chance to grow. Sometimes you just need to give a plant time to grow.

Yep , well thats the price you pay for combining Vr.platynema variegata with Vr .gigantea seideliana (Nova)in the mix that makes the Kiwi series ,but they are prone to Ph fluctuations wich will cause it as well , and as 'Seideliana ' can be a tad specific about certain climatic conditions ,it does'nt help ,fertilizer is not much of a problem with foliage Vrieseas ,dry roots are a problem to them, and as all plants (specially hybrids ) are individuals you get the odd plants out of a given cross that does every thing wrong ,I got one out of the " Milky Way " cross that had all the potential of a lovely soft pink with green and white tips ,BUT it wont grow to any size and makes heaps of deformed pups and a few good ones ,Why ? there is nothing in the cross to do so ,but it occurs in plants and all animals ,nature is not perfect , Jack

Everything I have read, and my limited personal experience, stresses that any combination of regular potting soil is fatal to miracle fruit. The recommended mixture is 50/50 perlite and pure peat moss, with good drainage, but never let it completely dry out. You can also add up to 20% used coffee grounds to the mixture. I'm using this mix on my larger plants & seedlings here in CT, and they are doing great. A little acidic fertilizer during the growing season may be a good idea too. It sounds like the problems started when you repotted in the inferior mixture. Don't cheap out in this area. Let us know how you make out with this. Good luck! --Rick in CT

I believe all plants will do this. Older leaves will get shed for any number of reasons. The plant itself looks very nice. If you lose a few leaves here and there, I wouldn't get too concerned. Now if they all start doing it, then that's a different story. Do you see any sign of new growth coming on? Keep doing what you are doing. Make sure it is warm, humid, and has plenty of light. I think it will be fine.
