I have a bunch growing in about 3/4 sun in large planters in Orange County, where the climate is about the same as the city of San Diego. They are thriving and have been in the planters for about a year. I haven't tried them in shade - I've always thought they liked a lot of sun, and so that is where I have grown them. At the huntington gardens in Pasadena (actually San Marino, which is near Pasadena), they are growing in the ground on a slope that gets a lot of sun, and seem happy there. In Orange County they bloom most of the spring, summer, and fall, but slow down in the winter. They are getting ready to bloom heavily right now.

I haven't spent the time yet to figure out the way to post pix here yet. I do live on the north side of Canyon Lake in a low and cold spot. Someday I will figure out this pic thing but until then I can only say that I do less at home than at work and believe whole heartly in things that do well with minimal maintence is what I gravitate toward in the landscape and the more challenging stuff I do on my deck in containers or that I don't want the DEER to touch aka tomato, Hibiscus, and myriad other goodies that need to be close to the kitchen like my herbs. Firecracker is a strange bird that is propagated by sticking cutting in upside down. This is how it spreads in nature and why it can be invasive in the wrong place and a joy in another, so keep this in mind when plannin a location for your little bundle of JOY.

My dear, departed grandmother used to quote a poem that she learned in the 1890âÂÂs. I finally learned it from her shortly before she died 30 years ago. Everytime we get extremes of weather, I think of this poem and have to smile.
