i could cry - had two beautiful mandevillas in pots - loads of blooms - went outside and one of them had a lot of dead leaves - we have had really crazy weather - i sprayed them with a 3 and 1 plant spray - what can i do one was really bad the other had some sort of rusty looking leaves - please help - i am a new gardener

It sounds as if you might have burned it with the chemicals. I'd suggest cutting all the bad leaves off, leaving the naked stems - it will replace the leaves very quickly. I would also suggest taking it out of the pot, washing the rootball off really good and repotting it in some well-draining soil. Mandevillas prefer the soil loose and fairly dry.

Mandevillas recover very well. I bought one very early in the year and had to leave it inside. By april when all the other plants were out, the mandevilla looked awful exactly as you described yours, lots of dead leaves, and some even rusted. I never fertilized mine, but maybe they over fertilized at the store. I took it out of its old pot, put it in a bigger new pot, and watered it very well. Then I lowered watering and kept it in shade. Now it has no flowers, but very active growth. Flowers will probably appear whenever the sun does which hasnt been for more than 2 days in a while.

I'm assuming it's getting good sun. Otherwise, I suspect that there is some problem at the roots (maybe involving the soil). How's the drainage? I'd be tempted to pot it up in some decent soil and just grow it containerized. It should be growing like a weed at this point.

I've tried the white Chilean and it's too tender. Looks great 8 months of the year..and really struggled to survive a bay area chill winter. Then one winter after three,it died. It was in a pot,so in ground might be different. I have a very old Pink Red Riding Hood..it too takes some loss in winter and really never grows beyond a 1' square vine-shrub. Some people think its an annual,but no,it will survive most bay area winter's year after year. I tried Alice Du Pont..forget that. Its good in San Diego..but our climate makes it look pretty bad in a cool spring (when you see them for sale ..and then it dies anyways after a summer recovery the next winter. Home Depot should wait until June... I've seen them out in full bloom in March or so..and my next trip to HD after getting cold rained on..they are already dropping leaves,going out of flower. They are so tempting though! So,in conclusion-ha, This is like a dream come true compared to my trials with the rest.

My son and DIL gave me a mandevilla for mother's day. It had a few dark spots on the ends of the leaves which eventually spread and I ended up cutting it way back to get rid of the damaged leaves. It started with a bunch of new leaves and I was hoping it was going to make a recovery. I had it out on the porch when it was warm but I've had it in the house at night bc the weather has been nuts here. In the 40's in PA at night...We just had a get together here Sunday and the plant was outside and it looked great. TWO days later and I've got this... The only thing I can think of is that it rained hard here yesterday and it was on the porch. Is it maybe a fungus in the soil that probably splashed up on the leaves? It rained really hard here. There was NO brown or black on the leaves on Sunday. What do I do now?
