What do you mean by "normal leaves" vs. "potato leaves"?.

What seed company? Can you post a pic of your seedlings?

erly bird, it is important to know what seed company and exactly what is written on the seed pack.

If it says just Bandywine, then yes, you should have PL foliage.

I'm not going to get into the varieties at TGS b'c they don't sell off the rack.

So if you could give us that information it would help, as to the exact name of the variety on the pack and the seed company involved.

And no, they don't revert. If the pack says Brandywine and you have definite RL foliage then you don't have Brandywine.

If the pack says Red Brandywine, then yes, as stated above, the foliage should be RL.

Can't really see the plants in the pic. At that size it is possible that you just can't tell the leaf type yet. Burpee sells 3 types: Brandywine, Brandywine Red, and Brandywine Pink.

Since Brandywine IS pink why would they sell something called Brandywine Pink?

With all the negative comments about Burpee these days re Black Pearl and now their F1 Tie-Dye, which is stealing a name that Brad Gates named one of his varieties and e-mail letters back and forth with Burpee about that have been posted at another message site, well, you couldn't pay me enough money to order anything from Burpee, especially tomato seed.

I didn't get a catalog this year, thank heavens, but are they still selling their hybrid Bucks County Red?

They first listed it as F1 Red Brandywine, and then that name disappeared and all of sudden the name Bucks County Red appeared with no connection made with it being an F1 RB, then several years went by and they only then said it was the same F1 RB they started out with. Burpee is headquartered in Warminster, PA and that's in Bucks County PA, thus the "clever" name.

Years ago when they first listed it I bought seeds for it as well as plants b/c it was the first time that a hybrid of a known heirloom variety had been available and quite frankly I was upset with that.

I raised plants from their F1 seed, from my own stock of OP Red Brandywine and then compared the plants of the F1 they sent as well as the plants from my RB as well as the plants from the F1 seed.

There was no darn difference at all. Triple Sigh.

You wanna get ticked off at Burpees? (Just a little bit of "mad" livens up dull days, you know.) Don't know if you noticed or not but Burpee shows the very same picture for Tomato Brandywine and Brandywine Pink. So maybe they're selling the same seed but packaging it with different labels, names, and descriptions.

Yeah I know Carolyn - agree completely!!! Won't even buy any of their stuff off the racks (except for the Brandy Boy seeds I have to order from them each year to meet the requests for the plant). GOT to wean those customers off them this year!!

Have you been out and about enough to notice that many places that used to offer Burpee seed racks have switched to F-M and N-K?

I really am hoping my grow-outs of Earl's Faux and Cowlick Brandywines will produce a BW that's good for the South. The Brandy Boys are really delicious and reliable, but I'll bet there will eventually be an OP Brandywine strain that will be productive for us, too, so we have a choice about buying from Burpee. I may be doubly doomed -- not only have I purchased Brandy Boys from them but their Early Hybrid Crenshaws, which I love. Both are sold by nobody else, since Burpee developed them.

Anyway, I'm growing Brandy Boys to compare with the Earl's Faux and Cowlick BW for production and taste this year, have started the two OPs already in hopes that I can set them out early with protection if needed. Also I'm growing the seedlings cool to keep them from getting leggy and too large so they'll be strong transplants, at least root-wise. I'll let you and everybody else know what I think when I evaluate the hybrid and these OP versions face to face, so to speak.

I don't buy much from them anyway. I really like JSS myself. But this year 90% of my stuff is OP! So I went with Victory and Heirloom acres. So far I'm pleased with the tomatoe seedlings. Some of the best I've ever grown. Super stocky, all but the Anna Russian and BW anyway. Those two seem a bit weak compared to the rest.

Thanks JTC but I'm all set seeing how these BW seedlings are ok.

Regarding Burpee, I agree they butchered the Brandywines and play naming games and their seeds are over priced and so are shipping costs BUT I can't live without BrandyBoy and after years of growing tomatoes reputed to be HUGE I've never seen tomatoes the size of Porterhouse. The average Porterhouse dwarfs the average Delicious, Big Zac, Tidwell German, NAR, etc. So, I can't live without BrandyBoy and I enjoy the Porterhouse monsters so Burpee got me trapped! But I buy them on the discount racks whenever possible.

Buck's County HYBRID is now on their bargain page where old Burpee varieties go to die and ONLY $3.75/pack...a bargain! LOL
