fertilizer for mango trees?

i tried searching for this but had problems.

I just purchased 3 dwarf mango trees and planted them in their pots. Any recommendations for fertilizer? how often should they be applied? how often should i water in the beginning.

Hi Tammy,

I use Dynamite Fertilizer its great for both in ground and safe for Contianers...but mine are being grown in FL, CA might have some better recommendations. I attached a link below, maybe you email them to see if this product is good to use in your area...I like to use this because it is slow release since Mango/Lychee are very prone to fertilizer burn...

As far as watering, I would let the soil dry out before I water...check it everyday for the first few weeks,after a while you will get a feel of when you need to water. They don't like their soil to stay wet and soggy...you can get a thin wood dowel and check the soil for dampness. Don't water till the dowel comes out almost dry. Again, this is what I have done with my two potted Mango trees...

There are many great fertilizers out there...I've also used Vigoro 6-4-6 from HD. I've used Dynamite either the Citrus blend, the green or Red container. Dynamite Fertilizers I believe its made by florikan...its slow release... You can also do a search on 8-3-9 Fertilizers, I know they sell these mostly in South FL. Pine Island Nursery and Excalibur come to mind...Osmocote plus, Nutricote (florikan too I think?) are others. Very important is to make sure your fertilizer has the much needed macros and micro nutrients in it, very important for the tree's health. I've also used a product called Citrus Nutritional Spray by (Southern Ag) though there are many products out there that work well...I apply it once a month through "foliar" application during growth flushes. I apply early evening so it doesn't burn the leaves. I prefer to fertilize my Mango trees once a month but "light" applications...I've always had better luck with more applications but in "less" amounts. I start around the beginning of March and apply the last application in early Sept. so it will go into a rest/dormancy period in late fall to early winter in hopes of getting blooms around Dec/January. I've been doing this for the last almost 7 years and I've had pretty good results.

I live in FL and Excalibur is about a 6 1/2 hour drive from me one way...I purchased a Maha from them since at the time they were the only ones that one for sale...while I was there I purchased a large bag of 8-3-9...but its completely used up by now and I can't warrant the long drive just for their fertilizer so I've been using either the Vigoro Citrus, Mango & Avocado or Sunniland brand Citrus, Mango & Avocado. If you only have 2 trees an excellent fertilizer in my humble opinion and I've used it on my trees when they were much smaller is Dynamite Brand...its slow release and its made by the same company as Nutricote aka Osmocote I believe? Its slow release so you don't need to apply too often...about every 3-6 months...as long as you apply it in lighter amounts than recommended it will will be better to apply a little more often in lesser amounts. I wish I still use it but its too cost prohibitive since I have about 12 Fruit trees to fertilize...quite expensive to use since it comes in a small container :o( Perfect if you only have a few fruit trees... Your tree looks perfect, I wouldn't worry. I live in the same Area and all my trees are doing well. Insects: The one you see is not a bad one, however there will be little white ones: Little leaf notchers... Just buy seven dust spray and connect it to the water hose and spray after the rainy season. They are annoying... they will eat the leaves. I fyou see spiders or Lizzards around your tree, encourage them as they will be your best friends in protecting your tree. The tree loves mulch, My tree wasa very small and puney.. found this site and listen to their advice and within 1 year, it got 10 times bigger. Good luck.

Thanks for the kind words everybody. I fertilize my mango trees a couple of times a year (in the early spring and summer) with a mix of slow-release macro-nutrient fertilizer and Ironite (70/30 ratio). This year I raked back the mulch around each of them and applied 1/3-1/2 bag of Black Kow composted cow manure. Then I re-mulched. I also applied a citrus/mango foliar spray about 1 week ago (I'll do this 1-2X's a year). If my trees have been planted for less than 1 year, I water them every 2-5 days (2 if it is really hot, or if they have a lot of new growth). In the winter I don't water them very often at all. My larger trees (Kent and Glenn) get watered less often. The only mango I have that looks sick is my Keitt. It has been in the ground for almost 3 years and is SLOWLY growing. This variety is known to be sickly when young so I'm being patient.

Hi Pug,
I see that you use Dynamite fertilizer on you're Mango trees, so did the nursery I bought my first trees at over the weekend. I just didn't see which kind it was. Which do you use? Citrus and palm, all purpose? I'm just starting in on the Mango craze, learn as I go. :)

Hi Alicia, I've actually used a couple of different ones, as sometimes the one I want is out of stock. The best Dynamite brand that I prefer if given a choice would be the Palm and Citrus...but that's the hardest to find, if I can't get that one...I use either the red container or the green all purpose. I also use fish emulsion during the growing season for us usually (March thru Sept.) as a supplement at 1/2 the recommended dosage.

Congrats on your new trees...I know you will enjoy them!

I will see what I can find here. As for the fish emulsion you use, what brand do you like and where do you find it at? What about seaweed fertilizer, is that something good to use you think? I would like my trees to be as healthy as yours, they always look great in the pictures you post. :).

You're welcome Alicia and thanks for the nice comments. I used the Alaska brand and used to buy it at WM and Lowe's till they quit carrying it. Now I have to buy it at Ace or a local feed store...more expensive unfortunately! But you can buy any brand, I know there's another good one called "Neptune" I think? I'm hoping WM will start carrying it again this coming Spring? I've used kelp and have had very good results too and it certainly can't hurt...just don't overdo with the fertilizer especially the ones in pots. As long as you use 1/2 or less the recommended dosage while its growing should work out great...mangoes are a little more prone to root/leaf burn than some of the others, so its best to fertilize "weakly".

Oh, I also found out that Nutricote and Florikote are the same as Dynamite and they supposedly sell it in larger bags. The company that makes them is "florikan" Below is the link with an #800 number.

Good luck and Enjoy your new trees! If I lived a couple more hours south I think I would have at least 20 different kinds of Mangoes,lol...I just hate covering/heating so many trees during freeze!

I bought my Baily two years ago and the green nutricote is still doing the job-leaves are full sized and the right color and its grown a good near 3' more in height. Good,saves me the worry of overdoing it.
