Help! What blooms end of May early June?

I have two friends that optimistically thought I took good notes. One has a graduation party the end of May and the other has a wedding the beginning of June. What plants would be blooming then and add a lot of punch to the flowerbeds? I'm thinking perennials more than annuals but would welcome all suggestions.

Either my notes aren't very good either, or there's a lull in the growing season at that time, because my notes indicate only these from May 16 - June 7: Red Hot Pokers, a few daylilies, valerian, yarrow, oenothera (sundrops), catchfly, blue flax, campanula, ice plant, spiderwort, poppies, echinacea (coneflower), and monarda (bee balm).

My hollyhocks are in bloom then- - but Regina is correct, there is a break in blooms between the spring flowers and the summer blooming perennials. But during that time, I am always amazed at how pretty the different textures and shades of green there are in the perennials. If you need a punch of color, perhaps you could fill in with a few snapdragons, gerbera daisies, etc. that are available at the nurseries in April and May.

Another option is to add a few pieces of garden art to add interest to the beds.

Exactly where in SW PA? I am in SW PA about 25 miles due north of Pittsburgh. If the location is south of Pittsburgh, my bloom time could be as much as 10 days to 2 weeks later than there. Late May into mid June, I have Weigela 'Midnght Wine' in bloom. This would require a pruning soon after bloom to keep it well shaped, but would be ok unpruned for several years at a time. Dianthus 'Neon Star' blooms heavily during the same time and sporadicaly throughout the summer. It is tolerant of poor conditions and needs no maintenance really. At just 5 or 6 inches tall, it could be easily mowed over when not in bloom. It's foliage is evergreen. Geranium cantabrigienese 'Biokova' and 'Karmina' are also in bloom then and pretty much carefree. This Geranium also is evergreen. Nepeta 'Walkers Low' would also be a good choice. Cutting back in late fall or very early spring would be desireable but not necessary. The Daylily "Stella d'Oro" blooms then and requires no care. And don't forget the ever popular Peony. Carefree and lives forever. Look into the Korean Dogwoods for a shrubby tree. Mine blooms about the end of the first week of June, but a little farther south may bring about an earlier bloom.

What can I sow now to bloom in May/June?

I quickly glanced through last year's pictures, and it doesn't look like there's much for me in May, but in June, I believe there were some blooms on these: Bachelor Buttons Nasturtiums Poppies Snap Dragons English Daisy I would think marigolds would have been too, if I had planted them earlier.

Right. I live in Northern California so would not be in the best position to help you; the best people would be local nurseries and gardens. They can give you the best advice on what to plant, when to plant it, and maybe even some tips on what wouold be attractive together in a bouquet for you. Then you could have a great time buying some of those seeds and bulbs to get it all going! Good luck on your marriage. I will say, though, that I would go for the June wedding. There is an old saying in my culture that goes "Marry in May, rue the day..."

An Aprium is a cross half apricot /half plum. It looks like an apricot; tastes like a sweet one; but is a bit firmer from the plum-side. It makes delicious anything. I usually make freezer jam, but I still have jars from last year. I don't want to waste a drop so I made the purée. I think I can do just about aything with that. I have a delicious recipe for an Apricot Bar that uses dried Apricots. I managed to find a conversion for fresh on an old Cooking post. Since it will use about 4-5 cups of fresh I figure that alone will take care of quite a few. I hope to make that this weekend. The neighbor's cat is a hunter and likes to patrol my yard too. She pretty much keeps the majority of birds and squirrels away. What little the critters get doesn't matter with the largess from this tree. I don't know about growing this tree on the Coast of Washington. I guess you'd have to ask a local nurseryman.

add to that the blooms on Hellebore that hold their shape and start changing colors at that point. And then there are the hosta textures, Fallopia textures on leaves, Kerria Japonica for a POP of blossom on delicate stems, wild honeysuckle is blooming by then, which is always nice, bulbs like woods hyacinths are coming strong, the late tulips and final daffs. Alliums are strong then, and sanseveria's or Hens and chicks are very handsome and bulking up for the season. Pawlonia trees are making their foxgloves in the trees, and the Mertonensis foxgloves are blooming, not to mention the Amsonia's, some assorted spirea's, the Oak Leaf hydrangea's are budding up, Loripedilum's are unfurling hot pink threads, and Viburnums are starting to crank up. Lilies (orientals and trumpets) are shooting thru the foliage making buds and are attractive, the spring tall phlox start in my flower beds, and the chinese Almond is in peak that that point, as well as the Malvacea or Zebrina's. Ninebarks are blooming too, especially my Diablo which is an eye popper for the foliage alone, but the clusters of white flowers drop you in your tracks.......there are more, but I'd have to go to the May digital files to see.........

(as of this moment, Nashville is in tornado warnings.)overlooking English Mountain in Eastern Tennessee, zone 7, Sunset zone 36 where it will be more fall like tomorrow so I'll finish up the houseplant trek and tweek the positions
