Needle Palm protection in zone 7a/7b
Comments (1)If you throw a black garbage bin over it, it should be enough protection for an average winter. Once it outgrows the garbage bin in a few years it is probably old enough that it wont need protection anymore. I've seen a few small needle palms at the Central Park Zoo and there are some others around NYC public gardens (I actually have yet to see one planted at a home garden in the area even though I have seen Trachys, Butias, and Sabal minors). I lost a small needle palm to a low of 14F in 2009 because I got my palm from Lowes and the big box stores are known to sell cold tolerant palms that do not actually see cold temperatures which makes them more susceptible to cold damage for the first 3 years or so. -Alex...See Morezone 5b/6a needle palm protection questions?
Comments (8)My needles arrived(7g)with most of the spears pulling,I did get my money back but I lost one,the other one is coming back from the side shoots and is doing quite well, some shoots are on their second to third leaf with the benefit of the root system of the main plant. I agree with DZ about the light and cover, since my needles were not favored by me to survive,I just built a leaf cage with moisture protection,(also wrapped the plants in burlap)they came through winter(lowest temps of -16F and -17F)with no added heat. One thing I wish I would have done is leave a min/max thermometer in with them to see how cold it got. think the main thing with needles(and other palms)this far north is to keep them dry and limit direct sun(during winter) and heat in an inclosure as the roots have a very hard time pulling up moisture when soil temps drop during winter....See MoreWhy is the needle palm protected by the government?
Comments (9)Consider too that this particular species along with many other palms is dioecious. That means it is either male or female, growing it out of its natural range will probably means it is unlikely to produce fertile seed without a male pollinator nearby. Asex. reproduction fine but they will all be clones and the strength and survival of he species depends on genetic variability as much as the absolute numbers of individuals. We see this problem with ginko trees. Very little genetic variation among among the trees grown in North America to begin with then too only males are usually planted so the species really cannot be said to be secure even if you see them everywhere. If a species is on the threatened or endangered list, you can be sure that there is good reason for it....See MoreZone 6 needle palm growers
Comments (5)I put plastic over the top to keep it dry like I teepee and the sabal died a couple years ago.I decided to replace sabals with these guys. I moved south west 35 miles from the city and im slowly moving everything to my new house...See Morecrispy_z7
