Never heard of it and it's apparently brand new to US markets and only available in NE. That's likely why no one on the Container forum had any info either. What's worse there is minimal info available about it on the web. Even their own website provides no info on it, no contents, their catalog link gives a 404 error, no reviews anywhere except a couple of negative comments about how dry it is, that it contains soil supposedly, and that the texture is far too fine. Those may be nothing more than personal opinions. No way to know. No list of distributors is provided so it may by just a one time low price deal they made with a few New England suppliers. The company is Canadian so IF it is distributed in Canada some of the folks on the Canadian forums may have had some experience with it. The company seems to primarily focus on Christmas trees, pallets, wood burning logs and pellets. Per their About Us page they only recently moved into products like this. Not real confidence building. Nothing about it on any of my professional horticultural websites either - no mention at all. It is as if it only popped up. In fact when you Google it or Bing it your post of this question comes up first - that's a scary clue to the fact that little is known about it. Sorry no more info is available that I can find. The people at Pro-Mix actually responded to my question as follows: "Due to the age of the product, it would be fine to mix it into the garden versus using it for starting seeds. As this product ages certain chemical additives breakdown and are no longer effective; i.e. wetting agent (now product is hard to wet), fertilizer charge (no longer present) and possibily the limestone has been activated (reducing it's effect on pH). Therefore, mixing it into soil is the best alternative. The peat moss, perlite and vermiculite in the product will help the soil be more porous and allow better drainage. " So I guess I'll have to buy new...unless anyone actually has experience with 5 year old BX. Thanks for any help!

A couple of things... I did not know about storing the ProMix BX out of the sun until it was too late. Neither did the place I purchased it from apparently. All it said on the packaging was to avoid extreme temperatures. Given the fact that temps were no higher than the low 70s during the week I had them sitting by the side of I my house, I figured that wasn't extreme. On top of that, they only received morning sunlight. In any case, I did soak the pro mix well when I was filling the containers last week. A good amount of that moisture was retained, at least just underneath the surface. When I moved the mix around with my hand today it did not feel dry at all. Not wet, just not dry. The seedlings I am having problems with are the eggplant and peppers, both are about 2" tall. The tomatoes are fine. I found that the best way to water the small seedlings was to hold the plant in place with one set of fingers and applying the water with the watering can. So, going back to my original question...is there something I can add on top of the pro mix? I am not going to remove these plants from their containers so I have to make due.

There's a hydroponics store in San Carlos that sells Pro-Mix HP; that's where I get it but I am not sure if they sell BX, if you need that one specifically. Grace
