Everything Martha knows about heirloom tomatoes she got from others who know more than her, ahem, and seldom has she ever given credit to those others in her publications or on her TV shows.

I've grown every variety that was mentioned above, save one, and I sure wouldn't describe them that way. LOL

Martha is not the person I would turn to for tomato recommendations even if their wer4e chefs and judges involved. The worth of any tomato tasting is what the competition was and we don't know that. Sorry, just my opinion.( smile)

I agree that some noted above are pretty darn good, but the day I refer to Big Rainbow as having a melony flavor is the day that...... well, I'd say that variety X tasted like a cross between a raspberry and a banana. LOL

Jaune Flamee is a variety I first listed in the SSE Yearbook years ago, in about 1992 actually, from a trade with a Frenchman, so I know it well. Big Rainbow, a gold/red bicolor was first listed by Dorothy Beiswinger from MN many years ago and is now one of over 100 similar gold/red bicolors known, Matt's Wild Cherry I can't stand the taste of and Sara's Galapagos is a variety named by Amy Goldman, a friend of Martha's, and Amy brought it back from a trip to the Galapagos, sent me some fruits she got through customs and it is a variety I do like very much but is not a true currant variety per my asking Dr. Roger Chatelet at the UC Davis Center and since Dr. Chatelet knows what's growing on each of the islands he could tell me, and did, that it's no doubt a stable interspecies cross, but I do like that variety very much. I also listed that one in the SSE YEarbook as did Amy after she had grown it, and many others now also lsit it/

I know, I wrote too much, but I tend to get a bit emotional when Martha is mentioned. More to the point she and her former husband Andy owned several hundred acres on the road where I now live and my neighbor down the road apiece bought the house and land from them in the early 70's.

Martha stories abound here, as in her stripping the house of all original hardware, having workmen pull the old apple cider press off the barn floor, and much more. ( wink)

Bought some of her tomato seeds two years in a row from Kmart. Germination was about 20 percent. Yes, I know how to start seeds. Had no problem with others. Maybe my bad thoughts kept them down.

Sorry but there are sources of valid gardening info and then there are the "other sources". Martha doesn't qualify for either category IMO.

Martha is a real "bell-ringer." The mention of her name gets some salivating (so to speak) while others get to itchin' for a fight.

Interesting fact from Carolyn that Amy Goldman is one of Martha's friends. She was the host of the tomato taste-off and the article describes her as an heirloom vegetable "guru."

The author of the piece is Barbara Damrosch, a woman of some credentials.

The tomatoes were tasted with sugar, salt, pepper and oil (olive, I'd say from the pictures, but the article doesn't specify), to see how the flavor changes.

Yes, there appears to be some Martha haters here. I am sure she is somehow responsible for the Iranian nuclear threat as well. I don't really see anything wrong with reading a glossy magazine with nice tomato pictures and gardening ideas.

I know that this may come as a shock to some, but not everyone grows their own tomatoes. Gasp! The tomato article in MSL may inspire people to try it. That's a good thing. Like that Hypertufa article, I had never heard of hypertufa and now I find there is a whole forum devoted to it on gardenweb. Imagine!

Hee hee.. i was once chief propagandist of the AntiMartha Movement over at the Garden Party, but i never heard that one.

Martha used to really kink my hose, but i've mellowed a lot in my (and Martha's) old age. I think people take her a lot more seriously than she takes herself...one of my favorite shows is "Whatever, Martha!" on Fine Living, Martha's daughter Alexis and her friend Jennifer watch clips from MS's show and rip and dish on her unmercifully...Martha is the executive producer.

What they said. In old movies from the 30's and 40's, the newspaper boys (always boys in those days and always street urchin types) never pronounced the word as it was spelled. Kind of like the disconnect in courtroom proceedings between the written word, "oyez, oyez" and what your ear hears ("hear ye, hear ye").
