New Orleans visit in June - what to see?

I'll be visiting New Orleans for the first time for 3-4 days in early June. Any garden events going on that I should know about? Any special garden-related places I should visit? I'll be in town from June 4-7, and I'll need to use a taxi or bus to get around.

Check the newspapers as well as the local tourism headquarters and chamber of commerce. Two years ago in the spring we happened to be there when a "secret garden" walking tour was going on in the French Quarter. Unbelievable!! Private gardens tucked away that you would never normally see. Another place that would require a car is Long View Gardens which is in Metarie which is a connected suburb to N.O. It would take about 20 - 30 minutes to get to. Beautiful gardens focused around a mansion. Metarie also has several streets with new and older restored homes that have beautiful landscaping (Huge Spanish Oaks, etc). If you are in to garden architecture and accessories look up in the yellow pages for architectural salvage yards. They have great unique items that would fit into any garden. The one I'm remembering is The Armodillo Salvage (or something like that) It would require a car also. Have fun.

THE must-see garden in New Orleans is Longue Vue. Don't miss it.

If you check a travel book about New Orleans, you will see several historic houses with gardens open to the public in the French Quarter. I just went on a tour of private gardens in the New Orleans area and I can't say there was anything fabulous in the French Quarter--garden-wise, that is--but the historic ones are nice.

I would definitely go to the Garden District (a section of N.O.) and stroll around. There are some wonderful gardens there but they are all private. However, you can see much from the sidewalk and many are planned that way.

There is also the N.O. Botanic Garden, nice but don't cry if you miss it.

If you have time, you can visit some of the plantation gardens along the Mississippi--again, check a travel book. And remember, it is VERY hot and humid in N.O. in June. Bring a hat and water bottle. Enjoy!

Well, thank you all for your suggestions! Unfortunately, my BIL had a bulging disk (he always seems to have SOME sort of ailment!)and many things got put on the back burner! We were also a few miles out of the main area (Magazine and Octavia)and missed out on a lot of things! We did see the Indian "parade", the usual stuff in the French Quarter, a dinner cruise, a regular tour (which I find very informational) and also a drive through some of the "Plantations" on a day when it was raining quite a bit. Had a great night of 3.17" of rain along with a GREAT night of booming thunder all night long! Hopefully the next time will be better!

Hi - This is my first year putting feeders up as I really didn't believe we could attract hummingbirds into our yard until one came right up to me in the yard to look at my bright blue earrings. :) I have been a little obsessed with them, ever since I visited my parents in Mesa, Arizona; they have a steady stream of hummingbirds all day and I just loved watching them. So I hung up two feeders and also hung a planter box of brightly colors flowers and within a couple of days, I had 3-4 different hummingbirds visiting my house all day long. I was so amazed. I am in Washington state and our lot is very shady, but they came anyway! They particularly like one feeder that is red and has the perches. The other is purple with no perches and they only go to it as a last resort. I have had 2 males and 2 females (all Rufous's I believe) and they would chase each other away constantly. In almost the entire month of June, I barely saw the feeder without a hummingbird on it, but now I barely see one on it at all. Not sure if this is typical or not - I keep changing the solution to see if maybe I did something wrong, but they are still barely coming around. And the flowers in the basket are still in full bloom! I miss my birds!

Agreed, if you don't like heat, don't pick June! Nancy, New Orleans really is kind of one big garden. Take some long slow walks through the French Quarter, take the streetcar to the Garden District and Uptown. The azaleas will probably be done blooming by then, but that's a beautiful time of year to visit. Oh, it has been years ago (late 1980s) that I was able to visit Schreiner's and Cooley's display gardens. They are luscious aren't they? Now if one could just keep all that color in the garden year round! I never tire of it. Did you catch the name of that one in the second photo? It looks like a rainbow.
