There are several that are decent:

Galina - cherry size, potato leaf, decent flavor
Yoder's German Yellow - nice beefsteak, regular leaf
Kellogg's Breakfast - light orange, excellent flavor
KBX - potato leaf from Kellogg's, huge fruit, high production, terrific flavor
Yellow Submarine - small pear shape, potato leaf, has decent flavor which Yellow Pear does NOT.

There are several others.

I think you mean a more aggressive taste rather than a higher acid content since most varieties tested for pH have about the same pH.

And there are few varieties that stay yellow at maturity, most turn to gold.

I suggest Aunt Gerties' Gold above all others I've grown of that color for superb taste.

Yellow Brandywine
Galina's
Gold Ball

And if you want to consider some good oranges I suggest:

Kellogg's Breakfast and KBX, the PL version
Earl of Edgecombe
Tangella
Jaune Flamme

And one to look for soon is Orange Minsk, which I think is offered for 2009 at Victory Seeds but I know I'll be sending it for trial to TGS and Sandhill Presrvation as well so that there will be more access to the public of what I think is a great tasting variety, from Minsk, Belarus.

Carolyn, who knows that others will also suggest what has done well for them re taste and growth and production. And not to worry about your Yellow Pear b'c many others also say not much taste, but oh so cute. ( smile)

I agree that KBX is a good choice. I grew it last year and loved it. Unless you have a pretty hip garden center, you probably won't find many of the really good heirloom varieties there. I recommend an organization that specializes in heirlooms, like Seed Saver's Exchange or Victory Seeds, both of which you can find online.

I also grew Persimmon last year, which I really enjoyed. I don't know what color it is officially considered, but I would say it was on the orangish side.

This year I'm looking for a couple of new yellow/whites. My sweetie is a chef who would like to be able to make an interesting "white" marinara sauce, preferably with tomatoes that are beautiful enough for gourmet salads as well. We're considering:

White Queen
Dr. Wyche's Yellow
Earl of Edgecombe
Hugh's
Lillian's Yellow Heirloom
Manyel
Orange Strawberry
Herman's Yellow

We would welcome any input anyone has to offer on any of those!

The public SSE catalog/ website doesn't have many tomato heirloom varieties at all compared to SSE membership and access to the Yearbook where there are about 4000 varieties listed that can be purchased from listed SSE members.

And while I encourage anyone interested in seed preservation to become an SSE member to help support their mission, I don't think requesting seeds from the YEarbook is for everyone until they've grown quite a few more commonly known varieties from elsewhere.

Dawn I've grown all that you list and some of those are not going to make a white sauce.( smile)

Asking for beautiful tomatoes for salads is, for me, a different question and it depends on how those salads are made since it would be slices or wedges that would be used so the overall beauty of a variety I don't think should be the main criterion, rather, taste should be as I see it.

Just my opinion, and as to the white sauce with white or colored pasta, well, been there done that. LOL

Dr. Wyche, Earl of Edgecombe, and Manyel. Those are the three that will combine high production, good flavor and excellent potential for high quality table grade fruit. White Queen is acceptable but production will be moderate at best. Yoder's German Yellow would be another that has the traits you request.

If you're looking for plants, I can highly recommend Laurel's Heirloom Tomatoes (www.heirloomtomatoplants.com). Although I've never ordered from him, Darrel Jones' www.selectedplants.com gets rave reviews in this forum.

Be advised, the time to order plants is NOW.

Toms Yellow Wonder, manyel, galinas and yellow submarine.

One that I like a lot that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread yet is Woodle Orange. the seeds are easy to come by, but like some of the others you're not likely to find it in a garden center. I can second the recommendation of Laurel Garza (heirloomtomatoplants.com).
She can help you find varieties that have the characteristics you're looking for. Staring from seed is fun and easy and part of the pleasure of growing heirlooms.

If it's plants you're looking for, in addition to Laurels plants based in CA, I can highly recommend Selected Plants.com where there's a huge selection of varieties, reasonable prices, superb packing and he also communicates with folks who contact him about his recommendations based on what folks tell him they want, in a general sense, if they don't have specific varieties in mind.

His name is Darrel Jones and he posts here as Fusion and signs off as DarJones and posted with recs just a few posts above this one in this thread.

And there's a lot more at his site about tomato culture, etc.

Had good luck with Dr. Wyche's yellow and with Homer Fike's Yellow Oxheart.

Had no luck with Aunt Gertie's Gold, Yellow Brandywine, Yellow Pear (horrible), or Kellogg's Breakfast (scarred skins, no flavour, and texture like the stringy goop inside a pumpkin), but KB was grown in horrible 2008 weather, and might not work so well in my climate, so trying KBX this year.
