Rose of Sharon 'Blue Satin' root question
Comments (0)Are the shallow roots of this shrub a problem for cement driveways if a row of this shurb is planted only two feet away along the driveway for about 30 feet? I plan to also plant a dwarf broadleaf evergreen, at the feet of these shurbs or maybe as a short evergreen hedge running along the driveway for the length of the Rose Of Sharon which I plant. This is a Hibiscus Syriacas 'Blue Satin'...See MoreCan you root Rose of Sharon?
Comments (5)I have a White Chiffon Althea and it reseeds like crazy. Maybe there are sterile varieties out there and maybe yours won't seed easily, but when I looked White Chiffon up, I found this sight: http://www.mobot.org/gardeninghelp/plantfinder/Plant.asp?code=C191, and it said, "This is a sterile cultivar that does not produce viable seed." Yeah, right! I almost laughed out loud. I pull up at least 50 new starts (and that's probably conservative) from seed every year. I don't mind pulling them up though, the blooms are so pretty and I even kept a seedling and planted it in another part of my garden. If you pull the seedlings out early enough, they come up pretty easily. If I were you and I really liked that variety, I would go back to that industrial park and pick some seedpods that have dried and plant them. Vickie...See MoreCan you root Rose of Sharon?
Comments (4)I received cuttings in the mail during the hot weather from a member of this site. When I opened the package they were hot and sweaty. Almost all of them have sprouted and doing well. So they should be easy most anytime if a person needs to prune I would suggest they go ahead and try. I just used root-tone and put them in the shade when they started growing they found homes in my flower beds. When I grew them down on the coast it seems the soil was better there as they sprouted up almost any there the seeds fell, here in the Houston area they seem to not grow as well. I have the best results from cuttings over seeds but has sent them as far north as Michigan as I remember them doing very well when I lived there....See MoreCan I take rose of sharon cuttings now?
