Square Foot Gardening

While setting on my butt trying to get over the worst head cold I have ever had, I have been playing around with Google Sketch up. If you have a problem with your spouse visualizing a verbal description of your imagination, I would recommend it very highly. You can produce a 3D solid model of your thoughts. When completed, you can pan, zoom and/or orbit the drawing in 3D solid and view it from any angle.

The first image is a photo of the composting area.

The second image is the conception drawing of the composting area ( after the fact).

The third image is of my gardening area included with downloaded trees to represent my orchard. I can pan, zoom and/or orbit any area of the drawing just as the composting area.

Very cool John! Usually my spouse can't picture what I want because I haven't decided yet, lol. It looks really neat!! I have a great amount of planning to do, yikes! Hubby finally relented and now I can use 3'x 22' in the front yard. I'll put that program to good use.

I used Google Sketchup to do the profile of the property scanning in the survey.

Not a bad tool but I did not find it intuitive to use.

Of course seeing as it is free I cannot complain.

Gee I guess I need to add all the square foot gardens to this some day.

Gardenbug: Thanks for sharing this. Your son is doing wonderful work and would probably enjoy a documentary called "Hole in the Wall" about an experiment in providing slum children in India with computers and access to the internet (he may know about it already). A description can be found on the site linked below, and the documentary itself is available in most libraries. Don't quite know how to express this or even if this is the right time and place: I am a lurker on gardenweb, and have enjoyed all the pictures you have posted over the years, of gardens and families. I have wanted to tell you how sorry I am about your little lion, but did not want to intrude on your grief. I'm here, Angela. The WIFI goes down every Sunday, with nobody at the RV park there to reset the router every few hours, but most of the rest of the time it has been holding up OK. I'm just really busy right now, with building the fence to keep the pups safe, and also building in the end of the porch to keep them from escaping that way. I've been dog tired and in bed by 9:30 most nights, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Must install gate hardware, post caps, solar lights and rope light on front porch, and lay some 12"x12" concrete stepping stones for a path from front gate to porch. Then I think I'll have no more major projects! I have a small container garden planted on the south side of the mobile home. Golddust, Too fun-nay! I have my very 1st Mac - an SE30 (this is an all in one with a black and white, 9-inch display, for those who need to brush up on their Mac history ;-) - sitting right next to my Mac G5 (earlier version of the Mac Pro, the current mama of all Macs), that I'm typing this on. I have no doubt I could fire that 21 year old baby up tomorrow and it would run like a top - S-L-O-W - but it would run ;-) Got the original keyboard, mouse and cable, and I bet if I looked hard enough I could find the software somewhere around here, not sure about the manuals ;-) I'm terribly interested in your BIL's baby - do you know how old and what size his monitor is? Mine is the largest sold at the time (approx. 8 years ago - yep, I'm using an EIGHT YEAR OLD, albeit top-of-the-line, Macintosh and it runs better than any PC I've ever used, period, the end), a first generation 30" Cinema Display and I use it as a TV/DVD/DVR too - is he planning on using it this way or has he already got it set up? If already set, I would really enjoy hearing the specifics or, if not, I can make recommendations based on my experience (and would provide an email addy if you want to take this off-forum, JLMK, I don't work for any software or hardware company, just so you know). BTW, all of the software I use, even the ancient OS 9 apps mostly fill my 30-inch Cinema Display. I suspect there is a display settings change needed. I'm running (an older) OS10.4.11, aka "Tiger" (so I can keep my OS 9 apps, even though most are laughable crutches at this point), but I've been using this Mac since "Jaguar" and the software has always mostly filled the screen. The current Mac OS, for those trying to keep up, is Snow Leopard, LOL! If I could justify or luxuriously afford an iPad, I'd probably get one, but I've got an iPhone, and it's very efficient for how small it is, so I'd probably opt for the Macbook Pro instead, if I could afford/needed it, even! As I said above, my 8 yr. old G5 leaves nothing to be desired except an Intel chip to run newer apps and mobility. But it won't be long now... ;-) Oh, wait, my car will be 10 yrs old next year, LOL! natal, Glad you got what was best for you - it really depends on your usage and comfort when choosing a computer, even for PC users *roll eyes* *snicker* J/K

We found out a couple of days ago a childhood friend of my daughter was in a terrible accident a little over a week ago. They think she got distracted from the road when she was trying to look through her purse for her phone. She was going at least the speed limit or faster and hit a tree. The impact was so hard that the car engine came up through the dashboard and pinned her in. The bottom half of her body was crushed. They've been trying to save her legs, but it's not looking so good. She's a mother with 2 kids, and only 32 years old. To add to the problem them have no health insurance. Thank goodness she didn't hit another car, but her life and the lives of her family have changed forever. I agree that phones and texting in a car should be illegal.

i'll have to check it out as soon as i get my laptop back, your sketches look pretty cool!! my hubs would freak if he could look into my mind!! i think he'd turn white and pass out then call the doctors in the white coats!! Hee hee!! **big huge grinn**
ohhhh your talking for sketching the garden?? **another grinn** yep he'd still freak!! i want to take up most of the yard with them sfg's!! with flowers and gardens. LOL ~Medo

Wow, John, that is bad to the bone! I am definitely going to play with that after I play with Print Artist. :-)

Well tell you what, when I win the lottery I will! LOL

If I build it will be behind the cabin beside the fenced square foot cabin about 150 feet in from the road.

Any more than that and you cannot hook into the sewer services for the town as the first floor of the property has to be 2 feet over the center line of the road. Also the top of the hill is about 800 feet in from the road. I would have to put in a well and septic.

One of the really nice things about this property is that is has water, sewer and high speed internet at the doorstep.

Also the hill is till pretty wooded.

Of course most of the property was all bush when I bought it.

When you see the cleared space that is the result of a couple of years of cutting, chipping , burning and stump pulling.

I have been clearing the lot lines and underbrushing as the bush is thick enough that is can be difficult to walk through.

Mike, I totally get the lottery thing. But boy, you're one MAJOR step ahead of me by already owning the property. And what a beautiful piece of property with great veiws you've got!

As for services, at least you don't have to bring them from town. I know, bringing them up the hill is bad enough. Hehe you could always live off the grid there.

As for all the clearing, great work! Sounds like a work in progress. Way to go!
