bumblebeez -- I did not know that Sevin was one of the culprits in the decline of the bee colonies. I'm glad you posted that. (Might be, it would be a good topic to post to everyone...I'll bet there are a lot of folks that aren't aware of it.) I did use the spray, not the dust (although I do have a can of it in the garage and when I get home, I'm bagging and tossing it), and I did use it at dusk. (Not because I knew any better, regarding bees, but because it wasn't windy at the time.) Thank you for the update on Sevin...I did not necessarily want to use it, but I was panicking. The new growth on the hollies is practically black with the things, there are so many of them. As you say, hollies are tough, so I'm not necessarily worried about them succumbing completely. Just that these particular hollies need to grow to become the screen they were designed for.

It's hard to tell from the picture. Almost looks like a fungus gnat which are from too wet of soil. It could be a spider mite too it's hard to tell You could try natural pest repellent with neem oil, soap, and water.

From the photo, I can't tell what kind of insect it is because it is too small. Try hosing them off and then spray with neem oil. Repeat with neem weekly until you no longer see them. The leaves in the background look like they may have scale. Can you post a closeup of them?

I found a few of these on my tree today too Would love to see an answer!
