Soil puzzle

I have two spots in my garden where I grow tomatoes. One spot has deep, rich, meadow soil. The other, near the house has shallower, less rich soil. Both get the same sun and other environmental factors. I fertilize both places the same.

The meadow tomatoes far outperform the house tomatoes. Why? Is it the depth or richness (or both) of the meadow soil?

As to richness, I understand tomatoes don't require a lot of fertilizer. And depth, some people grow tomatoes in containers or raised beds and prefer that over in-the-ground (with its deeper soils).

Any thoughts?
