Seeking Input for the the Fall 2011 ETPS and Future Swaps

If you plant to attended or think you might possibly attend the Fall 2011 East Tennessee Plant Swap, please let me know if you would rather have...

_____ A. the swap held on a Saturday at Tyson Park or

_____ B. the swap held on a Sunday at New Harvest Park

Secondly, for next year and future swaps would you rather have the swaps on...

_____ C. a Saturday morning or

_____ D. a Sunday sometime after noon.

This fall I prefer the New Harvest Park. In the future I prefer Saturday morning. I have not been able to attend the last several spring swaps due to other commitments, not because I did not want to attend. I love the swaps. Keep up the good work. I really appreciate your efforts.

Brandon, we still do not have things going good enough to divide anything yet, but I'm hoping for next year to have something to divide and share. If I were able to come, Saturday morning is always better, because that gives you time to plant (or at least get everything into some dirt). Most people have to be back at work on Monday morning and having it Sunday afternoon just doesn't give you much time for doing the planting. I'm not familiar with either of your parks, so I cannot make a judgment there. Do you know if Knockout Roses can be propagated by rooting? I have heard that my Bridal Wreath Spirea can be rooted. What about little bits of Pampas grass cut off from the main plant?

I've poked around many, many a day on the forums here, and finally made an account today. I would love to get an herb garden started this year. My interests are in tea and medicinal herbs, succulents and cacti, and trees. However, more than anything I enjoy surprises- so add "random/grab bag/any" to the list, too! I prefer indoor planting / potted planting, if this makes a difference. (But, I'm up for anything!) Sad story time: When I was about 11, I had to move across the country about 2 months after I had 3 tiny maple trees start growing in a long trough-like pencil holder in my windowsill. My parents said I couldn't take them with us, even though I said I would hold them in my lap the entire way there (in the car!) I loved my "tiny trees". I planted them in my favorite hiding spot, but when I moved back to the area, construction had destroyed where I planted them. Ever since then, I've wanted to grow more trees but just can't seem to get them going... :( But, that hasn't stopped me from trying!! Therefore, I am also looking for tips, advice, and suggestions on how to plant and maintain any seeds or plants provided me. Thank you so much for considering me!! John, I have to say that I am a bit concerned with that much water being that close. The Acer saccharum rootstock will not like 'wet feet' at all. My concern is that the water does not drain away just under the surface. So while the flow may never make it to the root ball, it may very well saturate the ground 3-4 inches down and remains that way for days longer. That would not be a good circumstance for a Sugar Maple, and one that is just planted with reduced root mass it could be much worse. Now everything depends on how ell it drains. I have clay, and it would be VERY bad. But your soil may drain much better and not be a problem. It just depends on the soil. The fact that you have a Eastern Red Cedar nearby being hit by the same flow, supports that the soil will drain quickly, but only you can answer that for sure. Couple of things you can do is raise the rootball 5-6 inches, but that would require replanting. Also you could go out to the lowest point of the swale (the low spot in the channel) and dig a small trench say 3-4 inches wide and 6-10 inches deep. Ideal being is you provide a lower concentrated channel so that the excess water can drain away more quickly after the rain stops. Kinda like a 'French Drain' but with no cover over the top. A narrow channel such as that is easily ignored and would help drain the excess away more quickly. JMHO. BTW, neglected to say the holes on the one tree look like what I got on our Fall Fiesta after last winter. Small area of bark damage probable from sun crack/scald. I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. I am hosting the January Swap and I noticed how early things seem to pop up for the Incredible Edible Swaps. Anyway, I will try to get this one listed by Dec. 8. I know it is hard to find seeds right now but hopefully everyone has some stashed away. I would like to allow seeds saved from your garden and partial packets of seeds for the January Winter Sowing Seed Swap. First of all, to help out if you don't have many appropraite seeds and secondly, I think some who sign up for the swap may not have winter sowed before so when experimenting, no need to do that with a lot of seeds! When I post the heading, I will include some sites that give guidlelines on what type of seeds to sow when and according to zones. I found that the herbs, tomatoes, and summer squash that I winter sowed were really vigorous plants. Some herbs do great, too. I have only been winter sowing for two years so I am not an expert, but I really think it is a wonderful method for planting. Jeanne

I too prefer Saturday morning - and of course New Harvest is very convenient for me but either park is good! And, as Eva said - "thanks for all your hard work"

Sunday afternoons tend to be better for us because of regular Saturday conflicts (soccer) during much of the fall and spring. However, if it is held on a Saturday I will do my best to be there. Tyson Park is quite a bit closer for us, but I am absolutely willing to drive to New Harvest Park for the swap and it is a wonderful spot for children.

On a related note, I have been working on rooting some rose cuttings (old roses) for the fall swap but so far no success. However, I will keep trying and hopefully get the hang of it before too long. I would love to be able to bring old roses to the swap.

Update....

Cheryl has invited us to have the swap at her house this fall. We've had a swap there before and things seemed to go well. So, since New Harvest isn't available for our fall swap, I'm pretty sure we'll take Cheryl up on her offer! Tentatively, the fall swap will be on Saturday, September 24 and will start at 10am. Setup will begin at 9:30, for those that want to get there a little early. We will probably do a potluck lunch at either 11:30 or 12. At this point, we have no plans for a speaker or program, but if anyone has an idea or what like to give a talk, please speak up! We'll post a map and directions on the swap website soon (hopefully). I'll post an announcement here in this forum when things are more definite.
