Winter tomato planting in So/Cal

MikeinSanDiego

Greetings. I have a friend who just moved to Hemet and would like to begin growing cherry tomatoes (Sun Gold, Sweet Millions, amoung others) as early as possible this season. The young plants will be placed in 18gal. containers. In Mid January, the daytime temps can reach 70+

but the nights can still drop to freezing.

My question is: Can the young plants be potted late Jan./early Feb. if they are covered at night? If this is workable, what's the best way (partial, full) to cover? Any material better than others in providing extra warmth?

I'd appreciate any advice given. Thanks.

Mike
