Charcoal vs. Fired Clay Pellets

I have heard that the purification layer in a terrarium can be substituted with a layer of fired clay pellets, which will last much longer. Is this true? What are advantages and disadvantages?

I use a false bottom in my large terrarium so use no potting materials at all . They are sustained hydroponicly.
I do use the clay pellets for some orchids but I find they are no better than crushed lava stone and cost about 3 times more. Both will last indefinitely
Charcoal will absorb all kind of stuff but this condition
is very short lived. Unless you intend to renew it on a regular basis not worth the expense.IMO.
IMO Hydroton (clay pellets0 are better than airaflor due to a lot less dust.
Since there are dozens of kinds of terrariums with dozens of kinds of plants not to mention animals . There are dozens of methods. Most anything will work for some length of time so the real ?? is which worked best in my situation?? In my situation i prefer the false bottom hydroponic method with very limited media .
Would help a lot to know what kind ans size of terrarium?? gary

I've heard the same thing about clay pellets. Any specific brands you would recommend?

DC: I understand your point and appreciate your posting it. What I was and Dicot were aiming at was the near impossiblilty of making a fully knowledreable decision about usiing one practice vs the other. With the Urea/bloodmeal example it is probably possible to calculate how much energy is required to get a specific amount of N to my garden using those 2 very different sources. There are many energy inputs required, from shipping to manufacturing to storage, etc.. I suspect nobody knows the answer to that question but it would be very useful to know. The elevator nearest to me is 2 blocks away; but, which took more energy to produce and get to the elevator, the 10 lb. of N from the alfalfa or from the urea, beats me, I'd truely like to know. Oh, and about getting the pickup covered with cow manure by a farmers loader, been there, shoveled that. Paulns: My garden is divided into thirds with at least one third in cover crop at all times. I agree with you 100% about the being in a hurry and further, feel like I'd be getting greedy in a sense to not do that rotation. I'd like to have more space to have more fallow but can't. The alternative is to fallow more of what I have which would mean less food, quite a balance to maintain and live with. The fertilizers added perhaps have been about being in a hurry. When I staarted growing these gardens several years ago the ground wasn't in very good shape. I had to add fertilizers like urea to get good production but have been slowly reducing them to where I now need less than 1/2 to none of what was initially required for the same responses. If I wasn't in a hurry, I may have been able to be satisfied with crappy but slowly improving yields while the soil's ability to produce far better yields came about from the composting, covercrops and manure additions I've been doing since the garden's beginning. I must say that I really miss the days when one could purchase 1 gal of fish emulsion for a mere $12.00!

Wow, it's a small world (or internet in this case). I don't keep up with the conifer forum as well as I do some of the other forums, so I didn't realize this thread was a spin off of another one, but it's still a good idea to have the link to the above article as a reference for any future searches. I agree with Ken, that frequent replanting would go a long way towards solving the issues relating to soil decomposition, except for four things. First, even if you change your soil every other year, most soils will still have some drainage deterioration towards the end of the two year period. Second, if you use your old soil and mix it back in as many people do, that has the potential to cause problems. Third, it's good for everyone to understand how drainage works so that they are better able to decide what ingredients are best for particular plants or circumstances. Different species have different moisture and drainage requirements, and different circumstances (climate, amount of supplemental watering available, etc) require adjustment. Fourth, and maybe most importantly, many people (we know who we are) won't replant frequently enough even though this would be best. As for drainage, as it applies to container culture, being vastly different from drainage, as it applies to in-ground plantings, I'm not so sure. The physics is the same! Only the variable, or circumstances, change. A true understanding of one is a true understanding of both.

I kept my trusty Weber for about a year when I bough mine, and it quickly became a charcoal storage unit. Things that the egg-shaped cookers do "better" than a kettle or gas grill, are, in my biased opinion, and in no particular order: * High temperature sear -- I can easily get the coals to a yellow-orange temperature. It is hot enough that the stainless-steel grill "self cleans" and I get a beautifully marked and seared steak. * Capacity -- I can easily get a 25# turkey *and* four full slabs of ribs into mine (equivalent of a 22 1/2" Weber grill size) * Temperature control -- with the top and bottom dampers, I can much more easily control fire temperature than I ever could on a charcoal kettle. I can be at 700 deg (dome) temperature and shut it down to a 400 deg "dwell" in a minute or two -- basically puts the fire out and cooks using the heat stored in the dome (this also means that unused charcoal is not consumed) -- see warning below * Cook pizza -- Real pizza. 700 deg isn't at all hard to obtain and maintain. * No cover needed -- It's pool tile. Hose it off with the pressure sprayer from time to time. Disadvantages -- its harder to have a "hot" side and a "cold" side. It is clearly cooler around the edges when using it as a grill and I generally deal with it that way. WARNING -- Get yourself a good set of mitts and a ideally a fire-resistant apron, and always, always look away when opening any charcoal-fired cooker of any sort that has been "shut down" in this manner. The high temperatures that remain can "vaporize" all kinds of combustibles, that basically burst into flame when the oxygen rushes in when you open the top. Think turning on the gas in the oven and then tossing in a match. It has never happened to me, but I'd hate to find out that I lost the roll of the dice. We are on our third heating season with a quadrafire insert. We heat the main part of our house--an area of approximately 1300 square feet. Noise was a consideration in our puchase (it is in our TV room) as was quality and looks. We have been extremely happy with our stove. We program the thermostat just like we would for our oil boiler. The hopper holds one 40lb bag of pellets. The burn pot is self cleaning. Once per week we thoroughly vacuum the burn chamber, clean the glass, and empty the ashes from the lower tray. We have it serviced annually. The amount of ash in the tray and dust in the pellets varies with the brand of pellets you burn. This year we found a dealer (in CT) that offered several different brands of pellets and detailed the wood and size of pellets. Our price for pellets was about $2.25 per bag--purchased by the ton. We will burn just over 2 tons. Quadrafire Mount Vernon insert. (60,000 btu)

Hydroton is the type I have had the most success in locating around me. Check for local hydroponics stores in your area -- why pay for shipping if you don't have to?

In my terrs I used lava rock (rinsed)as I did not want to incur the expense of using the puffed clay. I do use the hydroton for my orchids however, as I think it does a better job of wicking than lava rock.

IME Hydroton I've bought bags of airaflor(spelling) that were half dust. Locally it costs around 12 bucks for around a gallon while I can get crushed lava (black as well as red for around 6 bucks for 2 cubic feet.
I use these materials for mostly tropicals but are not grown in terrariums. My only one is a 75 gallon paludarium with 12 incjhes of water. terrestrial plants are epiphhytes grown on emergent driftwood.
I have started a 150 which will be used for terrestrials
but so far only contains Cutting from various tropical plants. I'm going to use a false bottom with a background of X foam it will be heated and will be exposed to rainfall.
i don't grow the types of orchids that would appreciate this type of setup but heck half the fun of a terrarium is experimenting??? gary
