That's right tomato fans.

I will try to fill the very big shoes of Santa Claus today!

Our company is involved with the Dee Dee Wallace Foundation, which is an organization that helps kids with emotional disabilities by providing special care and education. Some of these kids have had it pretty bad. I am amazed at how resilient they are considering the things they have been through. We try to provide them with an alternate outlook from the one they have at home. During the year, we go over once a month and read books to the kids and each Christmas, we divide them up amongst the various departments and buy them each $100-$150 worth of toys. The toys are tied up into big bags and the kids come over to our training facility to open their gifts. Of course someone has to play the part of Santa.

This will be my first time playing Santa, and I couldn't be more excited. We always go over to play with the kids when they open presents, but I think being Santa will be even more fun. I get to be a kid myself this year....well a kid in a big red suit with a beer belly ;~)

Deborah, Yes, all the roses you have listed are eligible to be exhibited. You are correct none of the roses listed appeared in past or present ARS publications. The six you mention are but a few of (by a rough estimate) of thousands of roses missing from the 2004 official "AEN" publication. The problem is that the CRL contains Roses in Commerce and Rose Registration updates. When a rose is listed, it may have a "NR" (not registered with "IRAR") or the new CRL notation, indicating rose introductions have not appeared in any ARS publications. When a rose first appears in the "CRL" with the "NR" notation, the following year it generally has an approved exhibition name "AEN". The problem is ARS does not post these "NR" changes in the next AEN publication, in the "Rose Registration" column of the American Rose or the handbook. This is preciously one reason why ARS should reinstate the Combined Rose List "CRL", as an official recognized publication to verify an "AEN" as the ARS Board approved in 1999. (Not a "temporary AEN" until the name is listed in one of the ARS publications). As it is stated, if there is a difference between what is in the "CRL" and the ARS "AEN" publication, ARS publication will prevail. Posted on the GW on 5-12-04 was a listing of all roses in the 2004 "Combined Rose List" having the new CRL notation, indicating these roses have not appeared in any publications of the American Rose Society. This only covers roses with the CRL notation. There are roses in all the back issues of the "CRL" with "NR" notation that need researching, to find out if the "NR" listing have been changed and now have a "AEN" designation, like all the roses Deborah had on her list. All of Deborahs roses started out with this "NR" notation, but were changed the following year having an "AEN". In the meantime her roses will be included in the next monthly posting on the GW of new or any corrections to the new 2004 "AEN". It may be to everyone benefit, if judges and exhibitors check their rose against what is in the 2004 "AEN" for missing or incorrect information. E-mail this information to me, and it will be on the next GW post. Waiting until the new 2005 "AEN" is published to share this valuable information, is doing an injustice to all exhibitors. The Combined Rose List is not a source for verifying AENs; it is only to be used as a reference if a rose is not listed in an ARS publication, but considered having a temporary "AEN". And as ARS stated, the handbook is no longer a reliable ARS publication as it previously was for verifying AENs. (See the post on new judges manual arrives). 5-13-04 Ronald Schwerdt

We have some family traditions that came from my family when I was a child, and new ones that we created. We opened one present on Christmas eve, and it was usually the kids "care package" of smoked oysters, smokehouse almonds, and dried apricots (This was always one of their favorite presents) Christmas presents were opened on Christmas morning, but could NOT be opened until Mom (me) had her coffee, so the kids always got up early and made a pot of coffee, and delivered a cup to me in bed. Then we opened presents. Since when I was a kid my mother always passed out the presents, I now always pass out the presents, although in the last few years, I have given relinquished that job to oldest daughter, and then oldest granddaughter. My kids do not come on Christmas day, because that want to stay home and create their own traditions. I think this is wonderful, cause I hated having to get up early, open presents, then go to two sets of parents. The kids never had time to play with their stuff, and we were just rushing around all day. Now we decide at Thanksgiving when we will celebrate Christmas together. This year it is Saturday, Dec. 22. Because the kids get sick of all the turkey type dinners at the holidays, we would have a fancy Christmas evening dinner of standing rib roast, with fresh seafood flown from the coast, or Crown roast pork and fancy canapes. The kids and grandkids always liked getting dressed up in fancy-pants clothes for this. Bear in mind that the "Christmas evening" was actually our designated Christmas evening, not the real one. We would not open presents until after the fancy dinner. When presents are opened, it is one at a time from youngest to oldest (I always made sure everybody got the same number of presents). Noboby can open theirs until we all see what the opener before us got. In my husbands family, people just went in and started ripping things open, and we never knew who got who what, or instructions would have been ripped away and discarded, and I found the entire thing to be a disorganized disaster that stressed me out. My kids do the same things now with their kids: one at a time and the proper thank yous passed on. Now, with all the kids grown up, and nobody coming here for the real Christmas day, we stay up late watching movies on Christmas eve then sleep in on Christmas day, open our gifts to each other, and then go visit his family for a traditional Christmas dinner. For the past several years, however, we have decided to set a new tradition: a little trip at Christmas. Two years ago: New Orleans, last year, a Caribbean cruise, and this year, San Antonio, Texas. We have found it kind of fun to start new traditions and watch our kids start their own. One other thing, whatever day we all decide to be our Christmas together, the following morning we always have a sausage and cheese and egg casserole for breakfast. Not really, Trace. One seedling was under the LED panel (which is only 45 watts), one was under the T5HOs and the mature grafted plant is still under the T5HO shelf. I've had to bring the seedlings upstairs because I do not water much in the basement and these will need regular watering as well as some feeding for the buds to fully develop. The grafted one also needs to be brought up, which I will do later. I had positioned it at the back because I was expecting it to slow down and go semi-dormant as it gets colder. I certainly was not expecting it to start blooming. Also, it isn't that cold there yet---my thermometer is still reporting something like 20 to 25C. I've had to snatch my winter-growing xerophytes and kick them back outdoors. Pagan

The Muppets Christmas Carol is one of the best. I used to watch it on Christmas Eve with my son when he was a kid. We always watched the Mr. Magoo Christmas Carol when I was a kid and I seem to recall it being on on Christmas Eve. A Charlie Brown Christmas is really my favorite. It takes me right back to being ten years old again, the first year it played. Anyone remember the Dolly Madison commercials? Santa sledding down the hill on the Norelco razor? I don't start any of it too early though or I'll be burnt out on Christmas before it gets here.

Well it's over.

The kids have come and gone with lots of presents and hopefully lots of Christmas cheer. I was just about to post pics, but realized I left my san-disk reader at the house (Bummer!). Just check back tomorrow and I should have some up.

Overall, it was really great to be able to pose as Santa. I was afraid that the kids would catch on that the hair and beard were fake, but ony one of them tried to pull by bead down. After I made my entrance and sang some Christmas songs, the kids got to open their presents (the best part for me). I love to watch the look on their faces when they open a box containing something they really like. Just makes you feel good.

I'll have to say the job was tougher than I thought. A couple of the kids just asked if I would visit their house this year :..( All I could say is, "I will do my best". I couldn't think of anything else. I didn't want to say "yes" and be the reason they were dissapointed on Christmas.

RIK, What fun for you and the kids! I can't wait to see the pictures. There's no little ones in my immediate family and I love any opportunity I can to see the looks on kids faces when they open their gifts. Thanks for sharing.

I'm in charge of our nursing unit's Adopt-a-Family program this year. We've adopted a family of 7...a single mom with 6 kids aged 6-16. On their wish list they asked for a t.v. among other things. I first thought "Oh boy:(" But, after things got rolling I found that a lot of my co-workers didn't want to shop and donated some money to let me do the shopping. Well, we raised enough to purchase a 27" television and a DVD player. Plus, many of the girls shopped and actually purchased a gift for each member of the family so that everyone will have something to open.

I had to call the coordinator of the project to ask if there would be someone available to help me carry the television into the center when I drop the gifts off tomorrow. I thought she was going to have a heart attack when she heard we bought a television. That, in itself, was worth participating in this program! I really didn't know how inexpensive t.v.s are these days if they're not flat screened or plasma. We even had money left over for some dvd's. That was tough trying to pick those out...I don't know what kids would like to watch so I got: E.T., The Wizard of Oz, Home Alone and Pochahontas...safe, family shows. Can you tell how excited I am about this!? I hope they like their gifts.

Bless all of you who have the Christmas spirit and are able to participate to make things better for others. That is a lot of what it is all about, and I hope that you are not restricted to keeping Christ out of Christmas! Everyone is better off from your efforts.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the positive feedback. It was great to be able to do this for the kids and I have some good pics to share. Unfortunately I have had some technical dificulty today, so it could be until Monday before I am able to have the pictures posted.(usb cable seems to be the problem)

And of course the "big kids" had to sit on Santa's lap as well.
Thanks to this lovely lady, we have the above pictures to enjoy. She's a good one. I may just have to pop the question before she gets away! ;~ )
