WTPS Roll Call/headcount

Hello all! I was wondering if we could get an idea of who is definitely planning to come. Since we are not too far off from the time, you know. This would help me in particular to determine what quantity of food to prepare and how many plants to bring. I surely do not want to come home with any of my own nor do I want to "guilt" anyone into taking the millions of daisies and "black-eyed susan" starts I have. I am also curious as to where we all will come from. Any Arkansans? Desoto-Countians? Fayette folks? Just excited at the possibilities! Thank you,

I'll be there - I can't wait.

Plants I have to share:
*little tomato plants (lots)
*some pepper plants (bell & jalapeno)
*nicotiana
*coleus
*big garden mums (yellow daisy-like bloom)

I will bring a dish or two for the potluck. I am also happy to contribute paper products or plastic forks, etc, if these are still needed so that burden is not just on a few people. I think some have already volunteered to bring name tags and trash bags. Let us know what else we need.

chinese evergreens (inside)
peppermint (outside)
weeping willows (tree)
red cannas
purple irises (rizomes)
money plants (if they come up, if not seeds)
birdhouse gourds (seeds)
daffadills (bulbs)
pussy willows (tree)
jade- (house plant)
water hycantha
will have to see what other water plants pop back in spring.

Oh and some cute wood bird house towel hangers I made.

I am the one with the name tags, and plates. I am bringing some weinie bites and do not know what other food.lol!

Someone said they were bringing the trash bags.

Paula, I'm bringing cookies too because when I was at the store this afternoon (likely while you were posting that you picked up a tray of cookies, lol), I was hungry and cookies sounded good. : ) I'm also bringing a big bowl of mixed fresh fruit. I bought red seedless grapes, green seedless grapes, pineapple, strawberries and 3 kinds of melon. Of course, I'm bringing Tim, door prizes, $$ for the potty and a few plants as well. I won't list every type of plant I'm bringing, but there's 8 flats of plants so far, including: -- about 100 tomato plants (representing virtually all the varieties on my 2014 Grow List) --five kinds of sweet bell peppers---mini bell peppers that mature to yellow or red and full-sized bells that mature to red, orange or yellow --the smallest hot pepper plants y'all ever will see but they are only a month old and fully hardened off---just tiny. They are mostly jalapenos (Early Jalapeno, Gigantea, Grande', Big Guy and probably Biker Billy), There might be an Ancho Gigantea plant or two in the flat of hot peppers. --some herbs, including Smokey Bronze Fennel, Florence Fennel, "Vierling" Dill for sure and some sort of basil, I think...and maybe some parsley --some flowers, including Outhouse Hollyhocks (mixed colors), Rose Mallow, Lion's Tail (tall, mint family, orange flowers) and Balsam. --A flower used more like an herb, specifically as a tea plant. It is Hibiscus sabdariffa and the calyx's from its flowers are used in tea--they put the Zing in Red Zinger tea. I mostly grow it just because it is a beautiful plant. I won't know until we load up the car in the morning if there's room for more flats of plants, but if there is room, I'll cram in some more plants. Looking forward to seeing everyone and so happy the severe weather won't start up until the Spring Fling is over! Dawn

Great post Renee....I'm so afraid I'll leave somebody out..but here goes, if I accidentally leave you out, you know I love ya anyway ! Renee and her mom....Every time I see the both of you at the swap you're always so sweet and so very generous. It is always so nice to get out of the van after the long drive and see the two of you there. Jan and Jim Hobbs (Jan_Hobbs) and Mona and David White (mlwgardener)...the very first hugs Catie and I get when we get down there. Makes the almost 5 hour drive worth every minute of it ! All of you have put so much time into the West TN plant swap, and there just aren't any people who are more gracious and welcoming and generous with their time and love. Virginia (Wild_Rose)...One of my YaYa sisters. I got to know you at the last swap in the best of ways...sitting around the camp fire, then getting to camp out right beside you by the river. What a sweet soul and a terrific friend. Jeff(BOV) and Lavonne . Jeff always manages to make me smile and roll with laughter even at the worst of times and I don't know if he realizes how much I appreciate that. Lavonne, bless her , puts up with us all. You both worked so hard at the last WTPS to make it a very organized and friendly event. Marianne... What can I say my ya ya sister ? You and I have shared some memories that I will never forget. The best of times around that camp fire, and picking up rocks up and down the riverside. Another friend with a generous and giving heart. Mel ( Mel_TN)....I will never forget the "vacation" I took in your garden that day. Your generosity and friendship mean alot to me. Rebecca and Doug ( and the little ones )...So very generous and helpful and too darn smart ! And the little ones who make me smile and whom Catie and Aric has had the best of times with. The kids can't wait to hunt frogs with them again. Nancy ..another Crazy woman in Seymour lol. You are so sweet and so very talented and generous to share your crafty talents with everyone, oh, and to haul that 6' tall Rose of Sharon home for me lol. Cheryl (TnShadyLady)...I so enjoyed meeting you and I feel a kindred spirit there. I am looking foward to getting to know you better. You were absolutely the most generous of people at the East TN plant swap. You brought all those lovely plants just to give away and share, and didn't want a thing in return. Well you got something anyway...from me..my friendship. Norm and your sweet better half.....I wish I lived closer to you guys because I sure do miss those hugs and the love and caring I feel when I see the both of you. It's been two years in a row now that you've gifted me with a big ole bag of your home grown gourds Norm and the beautiful succulents you know I love. You are always thinking about others and I appreciate the both of you. Now...I'm just about in tears because I'm realizing how much I miss my extended family. First of all, thanks again for your guidance and encouragement. The event is over and yes, there were a few moments of tension. Although they did not involve us directly. I have to confess now to something that I didn't admit to earlier in an effort to avoid looking like a complete doormat. Early on I had offered to help with a dessert buffet to serve at the church, so they would have something for those guests they weren't inviting. As it turned out, I purchased, and made everything that was served (with the help of two friends and our children). All of the items were chosen by the bride ahead of time. We decorated the tables with greenery and candles, and made a beautiful and tasty presentation including choc. dipped strawberries, etc. We had fun working together on it which made it worth it. Since I hadn't originally intended on doing it all, I decided to forgo a "traditional" wedding gift. While we were in the middle of baking and dipping etc., I received a phone call asking how they should word something on the program inviting those who were not invited to the "reception" to enjoy the treats at the church. I told them that there was going to be plenty of food for everyone. Then I was told that they wanted to limit it to those who were not going to the reception so they could talk to others faster and keep to their time schedule. I replied that there was no way to word it that would not draw more attention to the fact that some people were not invited to the reception, and told them again that we had already worked very hard to make enough food for everyone. They finally agreed and dropped it. My 8 year old went up to the bride during the "church reception" and told her that he should be invited to the dinner because he was "part of it", she told him to talk to his mother. I questioned him and confirmed that she never said anything like yes, but just wanted me to handle it. So I told him that technically he should be included, but explained that it was going to be very boring and that he was going to have more fun at his friend's house. He seemed to accept that. One guest, a high-school friend of both the bride and groom, asked the bride how to get to the restaurant. She apparently told him that the seating at the restaurant was limited and that they had not been able to invite him to that part. I guess he decided to make a point of how rude he thought they were, because he showed up at the reception anyway. They had the owner of the restaurant ask him to leave. He replied that he was only planning on staying until the bride and groom got there so he could wish them well. So then the bride's mother came up and insisted that he leave, telling him that he already offered his congratulations at the church. (Incidentally, the bride never wanted him invited to the wedding for some reason, but gave in when he called asking if his invitation was lost.) He remained in the parking lot until the couple arrived, and said something like, "Well, apparently I'm not invited to celebrate with you, but I just wanted to wish you well before I leave." The bride's mother said something to me about not wanting to be rude, but that they shouldn't have to deal with something like this on their wedding day. Personally, I feel they created the mess, and she should have let them suffer the fallout. One niece,(the flower-girl) who at fourteen towers over several bridemaids, including another niece who is only thirteen, was somehow the only member of the wedding party (attending the recep.) not included in the limo ride to the reception. She was understandably crushed. They said something about the ring-bearer not going so.... Incredible! Anyway, it took forever to serve everyone. We literally sat at the table for 2 1/2 hours before they brought our table's entre'. The portions were so small that my husband ended up taking our boys to Burger King after to get something else to eat. Our only relatives from out-of-town had assigned seating in the corner opposite from us. And I mean...they were locked in...the only way for them to get out was to ask four other people to get up first. So I only got to visit with them for a few minutes after dinner was served, and while the cake was cut. They were seated next to the parents of the bride and friends of the brides parents that they didn't know. The best thing I can say is It's Over!; the couple is very good-looking; my ds was extremely cute as the ring-bearer and even added some comic relief the bride was hoping for; it was fun working with friends the day before; and It's Over!!!

I was amazed to discover this tradition after moving to New Mexico -- amazed and horrified, because no one would confuse my housekeeping with Martha Stewart's. We had moved here from the Bay Area, where we had observed that the tradition was for people to arrive slightly late for dinner invitations. So we invited for 7 pm, sure that our guests would be there by 7:20. At 6:58, we heard footsteps on the porch. My husband hadn't showered, my hair was wet, I was just heading into the kitchen for a quick post-cooking cleanup so that room would be OK... but we opened the door and smiled anyway. Then, the wife immediately asked for a tour of the house (we were living in a very cute little 1913 bungalow, so maybe that was part of it, but still). We hadn't assumed that every room would have to be presentable, and they weren't, but despite our apologies she persistently requested to see *everything*, including all our academic clutter in the study. And we knew this people were terrible gossips, too: it was a polite invite-folks-from-work dinner. It was awful. I was mortified. Seems to be a local thing, because people still ask, even now that we're living in a boring 1980s ranch. I do close bedroom doors now, but the kids run in and out, so everything winds up getting seen as people chase their children... But I do find this an odd custom. I don't remember this being common in Chicago when I was growing up.

I said I was bringing the trash bags. I think I will make a pasta salad, put it just depends on what I am in the mood for that day. I am sorry I won't be able to stay to help with the grounds I have to go to work later that night so I will need to go take a nap. I don't know what all plants I will be bringing, I don't have a lot of any one thing just a little of this and that. I do know that I will be bringing:

I guess I need to be there since I have the keys and alarm code to the church. Probably have my wife and two "kids" in tow as well.

I'll be covering the Iced Tea, Lemonade, Water and manning the Popcorn Machine.

Will also be bringing some home-mande "adult beverages" of the vino persuasion: Fig, Cranberry, Blueberry, Blackberry Merlot, Raspberry/White-Zinfandel, "Calypso Bianco"... and perhaps elderberry, if it's finished in time.

Fig cuttings; Chicago Hardy, Lattarula (Italian Honey) Peter's Honey, Desert King, Quantico, Jacks Quarter Pounder, and a mix of unidentified but delicious varieties I took cuttings of up in Covington this past January.

Grapevines: Foch, Cayuga, Chancellor, Reliance.

Elderberry: Johns, Nova, Adams, York

Lots of other seedlings started

1 Nectar Boysenberry
1 Grenada Pomegranate Tree
1 Black Old Fashioned Muscadine Vine
1 Black Spanish Southern Wine Grape Vine

And anything else I have left-over at the end of the day.

I have heard from two others in e-mail that are coming. I am planning on 50+ on my end. We maybe suprised at how many do show up. I figure I will keep some extra plants-seeds in the car just incase.

I'm a Tipton County Newbie to this forum - I plan to come to the plant swap but alas I don't have plants! I just moved (in the fall) into a house with lots of places for gardens, and not even a single flowerbed on the place! atokadawn is helping the cause with her driveway of mulch lol. I will bring a dish or two and a bunch of walmart bags - the only plants I have are wild onions I'm afraid!

Hurrah! I can't wait to meet all of you! Sandsquid, I 'll happily dig in the trenches for a taste of your blueberry wine. A friend of mine works for Wild oats/Whole foods and had to go to Florida. She brought back a lovely blueberry wine that alas, can't be found near abouts. I will be making a 13x9 casserole, not really sure of what. Also a fruit salad.
Plants I will be bringing:

sedum
purple iris rhizomes
wild columbine
couple of fans of Autumn Red daylily
same for an unnamed yellow daylily. This one is fragrant!

For those of you who don't have plants...good for me! You can have all of mine!

Just a taste?-) I was hoping to get rid of a few _bottles_!

This year, I made 6 Gallons of Blueberry, 7 Gallons of Cranberry, and 3 Gallons of a 60%-Blueberry / 30%-Cranberry blend, 5 Gallons of Elderberry, 3 Gallons of Key Lime, well the list goes on and on..... but I am running out of empty bottles.

If anybody has any empty wine bottles, I offer a 6:1 exchange.

John, you checked with the VFW to see if they would hold the bottles for ya? They did for me as long as I did a pick up once a week.
