What constitutes a single pole bean plant? Cuke?

Hi,

I'm confused about something for my green beans.

I bought a 6 pack of beautiful "Emerite" french pole beans and they're starting to crawl up the netting. Exciting.

But I'm not clear on the spacing and what constitutes a single plant. Is each little shoot its own plant (in the 8 per sq ft spacing)?

Each little square of the 6-pack I bought had 2 or 3 shoots in it, and I THOUGHT each little square was a single plant... so I essentially planted all 6 of the packs in a square foot (I know it was 8 per square but they only had 1 6-pack left.)

Anywhow, when I saw my neighbor's beans tonight, he had only one shoot per spot, and they're growing vigorously and strong, and he told me that sometimes those little 6 packs have more than one plant per square because of the way they plant the seeds and then don't thin them.

So if this is true, then what I actually have is about 18 plants in a square foot... which will be ridiculous.

Should I cut or pinch off the smallest plants in each of the spots I planted?

I think I have the same situation with my cukes (3 stems in a single 4" plastic pot). Is that 1 plant, or 3?

Thanks for the info,

Kristi
