SFG and the heat--does Mel's mix help keep things cool?

I am new to the SFG concept, but I have grown in raised beds for a few years. I flipped through Mel's book and noticed he has a lot of crops like Cilantro, carrots, and even radishes listed as Summer crops and that makes me wonder....does using his mix and method actually help prolong the growing season of some spring time crops? Or, is his book written for those in the northern half of the country and, for people like myself in Florida, we should ignore those planting guidelines?

I am getting ready to play around with a few things I would never plant in April (carrots, lettuce--summer varieties, etc.) but thought I would check with the experts here before taking this "experiment" a little too far.
