thyme KEEPS dying...

Hi all, thank you so much for the help with my sq ft garden! Everything is doing quite well, with the exception of my strawberries, which are in a pot and dying (I think too much water) and my ThymÃ©!!

The thyme has even been replaced with a new plant from the store, and the same thing happened to it! They both seem to be growing kind of grayish and then the gray stems turn powdery and disintergrate. Now, it seems to be spreading to my lavender! Any ideas??

It may be powdery mildew. I would suggest you find a quart spray bottle (like from Windex) and wash it out real well. Then add 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of Murphy's Oil soap, or any non-degreaser, non-antibacterial liquid soap, fill the bottle with lukewarm water, shake well, and spray it thoroughly on the affected plants. Make sure you get the bottoms of the leaves as well.
Always works for me.

Oh, Thank You so much!!! I am going to try it right now!! I'm so sad that I keep losing my thyme! so, I will definitely need to wash before using these, right?

This isn't a very active forum; you may have better luck over in the Perennial forum. Thyme is one of the toughest plants around. Are you overwatering it? Is it getting all day sun? Thyme loves very well-drained soil, little to no supplemental water and can easily suffer from too much watering or fertilizing. I would start by assessing those criteria and definitely keep pulling up the competing grass.

Unfortunately thyme plants do get old and start to brown from their center. This also depends on the type of thyme. Wooley thyme is probably the best as it is very dense and little else can get through. If you have grass growing up in your tyhme you will never be able to really dig it all out. I don't mean to sound like a pessimist but you might be faceing a do over. This type of application is often nice for a couple of year but then falls apart. Good luck!

OK, I will attempt to divide and be more vigilant about trimming. Gardengal, is this kind of center dieback what you see as a result of environmental condition, and that can't be helped by cultivation? I don't think this is a case of the soil staying wet as it is practically sand under the pavers.

Good luck with it. I'd wash anything from the garden anyway, whether or not you use any sort of spray.
