Nostalgic for the past season's roses

I was all eager to spend a lovely autumn day finishing repainting my front porch, but when I got up today, it was chilly and rainy out there! So I decided to browse my photo album a bit--I miss my roses! Here are some garden shots and singles for you to enjoy also, I hope.

Elle (HT) looks so charming here--a bit of bright red Dublin Bay climber showing on the right.

Here's four lovely pinks in a cluster--starting on the left, Austin's Mayflower, Cora Stubbs peony, floribunda Our Lady of Guadalupe, and behind it, Austin's Mortimer Sackler.

Here's one I'm going to miss--Love & Peace (HT). For some strange reason, it really declined after its big spring bloom, and given that it is prone to BS at the end of each cycle, I ruthlessly spaded it--but I will certainly miss its beautiful blooms.

Three of my favorites: That 3 Molineux (Austin) planted close together on the right, plus the vivid blue/purple larkspur that grows back wild each year and the new lilies called Silken Road. I liked them so well that I ordered 3 more to plant in there also.

I have often bragged about my 7 darling minis called Sweet Diana, but it just occurred to me that I rarely show them. Well, here they are.

How's this for big, fat, and gorgeous? Peter Mayle (HT)--I have several of him and am crazy about this show-off!

I lost my beloved Buff Beauty during the long, drought-ridden, oven-hot summer. Bout broke my heart, but I already have an order in for its replacement to (hopefully) sprawl along the back fence like its predecessor did:

I meant to post a couple more. Here they are:

Double Knock Out, mixed in with other flowers, can be most attractive--even if its individual flowers don't bear up well to close inspection. I like it with the white lilies and the bright yellow Black-eyed Susans.

Yep, same story here. Very minimal spring flush at all, and only scattered single blooms on most bushes. Even among my reliable all-summer bloomers, there has been a much longer wait between flushes than usual. Bad Worishofen lost so many canes over the winter that it's only about a foot tall, but 2-3' wide, and is just now starting to bloom in a reasonably abundant fashion, but on a small plant. We've had plenty of rain at the right time, except for a few weeks in July and one in August, so it's not the amount of water. They were just so damaged from the winter cold that they've all had to rebuild cane from which to bloom next year. I've been steeling myself to only expect those few blooms, and have been sacrificing even some of those to build up a better cane structure again. Last thing I want next year is a garden full of one-cane wonders that used to be full bushes! So every time I see a cane stretching up over about 3-4 feet, I trim it down to about 2 feet to encourage some branching. Even if I let it bloom, it's only going to have one solitary bloom at the end of a 5 foot cane, and that's actually more depressing than cutting off the cane and watching the rose bush out. I simply think of my roses as "bushes" this year, rather than flowering plants, and I've emphasized the annuals and other perennials for the needed color. Sympathies on the roses that grew backwards, Kate. I agree that there have been roses that had no visible cane damage and normally would be considered a winter survival, that this year collapsed and died mid-season. Likely this is the root damage Seil is talking about, and she certainly has had some work rebuilding her roses from the winter carnage. It's amazing to me how much difference there is between one foot of cane and pruning a rose to the ground. With even a foot to regrow from, my roses are usually indistinguishable from ones with 3-4 feet of cane, at least in terms of richness and frequency of bloom. Pruning almost everything to the ground seems to be restarting the rose clock from the "sleep" stage, and we might have to resign ourselves to a bit of "creep" next year even. That is, assuming we don't have another Polar Vortex winter (sigh). Hang in there, and let's hope for at least some fall flush! Cynthia

I had similar experiences. Like Seil I had a hard winter, lots of dieback, too much rain and cloud cover, so much BS, but some spurts of great roses blooming. Sara, last year I had more roses and could cut a bouquet whenever, not this year, about 1/3 less blooms. However, right now the bushes are looking good with chance of frost tonight. I plan on cutting this evening! I do think I had more fun growing and enjoying my roses this year than in the past.

"I suppose I'd need a green-house to attempt to hybridize." I wouldn't talk myself out of it too soon. I think a lot of us amateurs make do without a greenhouse (although there are advantages). One advantage for you would be the insulation that snow provides. I can think of at least one cross I would attempt if I lived in your zone and that would be Prairie Sunrise x Morden Sunrise. I just plant out in pots to overwinter outside (unless I end up with too many early germinations- then I bring in under lights). I already have nine new seedlings to start the new season out with: Personally, If I were you, I would look at the Explorer and Parkland series. Carefree Beauty is an excellent mother to start playing around with. I got rid of it because it gave me too many seedlings and it was too tempting to work with (because it's always in bloom). I have at least one keeper from it this year that I plan to carry forward: Carefree Beauty x Pope John Paul II (very fragrant- shrub rose like Carefree Beauty) Also. In a few days I should a have the fourth bloom open on my yellow. Because of its vigor and health I believe Knockout is involved in it somehow. Dad was probably (Knockout x Flirtatious). The small petal size, flower form (inside petals shorter than the outside), and the cherry edging also seem to confirm this. That does NOT explain the extreme doubleness of it though. It is somewhat like another seedling from this year- Flirtatious x (KO x Flirtatious).

Peren.all - Astilboides is one of my favorite plants! I'm a sucker for big leaves :-). I usually cut the flowers down pretty quick as they are a distraction from the leaf display! These Astilboides in our north alley garden bask in water delivered by a (buried under the path) pipe from the end of a downspout at the back corner of the house. The neighbour next door also directs water to them from one of their downspouts. I have another Astilboides elsewhere in the garden that doesn't have a source of extra water and it is pathetic in comparison to these ones: What are you other favorite big leafed plants?

Geautiful and inspiring on this cold winter day.

Chrysler Imperial - I have that one - not that good here. Just a few blooms a year. And NO SCENT!!! Mine are very red; but I love the pink of yours better. My CI is really not worth keeping. What do you think of yours?

I love your Peter Mayle! Mine has maybe 2 or 3 blooms a year. Another one that just doesn't do all that well here. But the scent is really nice. What do you think of yours?

I have Elle too. Mine has no fragrance. Does yours??

Canadian Rose:
I love my Chrysler Imperial, but it isn't the most vigorous plant and it doesn't re-bloom as quickly as I'd like, but it is lovely when it does bloom. Yes, mine has fragrance. To me the color in the picture is red, not pink, but in some weather, the red is a much deeper, darker red--very velvety-looking.

I'm not sure why your roses don't have fragrance. My Peter Mayle has a strong fragrance, and Elle has a medium strong fragrance. I'm no good at describing fragrances, however.

Yes, both Golden Showers and Love & Peace put on a lovely show and I will miss both. Both had some BS problems, though not real heavy BS. I was so sad when Golden Showers got RRD, but after I took it out, I realized that corner of the garden had become much too crammed and now the other plants could spread out and do their thing, so I haven't replaced it--but I really miss it!

Love & Peace had such gorgeous blooms but it was always the first rose in my garden to get BS and I'm trying to get rid of such roses, so out it went. Hard to do, however. I'm replacing it with Berolina (yellow) that is supposed to be very disease-resistance. I hope so. However, some people don't seem to have BS problems with Love & Peace, so I'm not sure what is going on there.

Probably the cooler weather. I have many roses that have fantastic fragrance - which makes it curious why some don't. Probably never know why.
Yeah, it's better to go with the roses which are easier to care for. You probably get more enjoyment out of them.
At any rate, your roses are GORGEOUS!!

Florence, I'm glad my roses/gardens brought you pleasure. I still remember pictures of you "survival of the fittest" garden, as you called it. Such lovely roses surviving in it and I loved viewing them.
