Strawberries in a raised bed

Hi all, I haven't posted on this forum for a good while because of all the advertisements but it looks like they have cut back on them so here goes. I am planning on devoting one bed to strawberries either a 4X4 or 4X5 bed. What spacing should I use and how many pints should I expect? John

Hi John -

I follow your blog.

I have some strawberry pyramids with three levels in a 4 x 4 bed. I manage to fit 24 strawberry plants in each of these.

Otherwise, spacing is about 12 inches apart for the most part with strawberries. They fill in and use all of the space.

We got about 19 pounds of strawberries from 48 plants last year throughout the season. We have Tri-Strar strawberries that produce all season long.

I plan on planting 2 strawberries per square on a 4 X 4 raised bed and let a few of the runners mature. It is recommended to do 4 per square foot though and clip off any runner plants for bigger berries. Plan on the plants to produce for 3 years. I am not sure the yield but read this somewhere on this forum.

I just recently moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta (supposed to be zone 3b) and was planning on planting raspberries and strawberries in raised beds. lucymay: You cannot bury strawberry crowns under a couple inches of compost. They will not grow up through it. Gray mold is certainly promoted by wet weather, but the variety of the strawberry can also play a part. Generally, the softer berries suffer from gray mold more frequently than the firm Junebearers. Thanks Scott, but this isn't just placing the runners where I want them (though I can do that with some where the end of the old bed meets the other end of the new bed - just have about a foot in the middle to dig out after I move wire hoops). Can I dig out mother plants with runners and transplant them all this late in the year, or is that going to stress them too much? Maybe if I transplant at all, remove the runners so the transplant can establish itself? I guess I can let runners root in old carrot and squash beds they're creeping into and just move them in the spring but DH wants me to move or cut the ones starting to hang into the lawn ;-)

You can 2 years but it really is better to treat these as an annual. we have gone 3 years on ever bearing strawberries and the 3rd year was always crappy-low quality and low yields. One thing we have done (though not as consistently as we should) is plant a new bed in the fall and put a hoophouse over it so it will flower in March and set berries by May 1st (you don't have to pull off the flowers if you fall plant as the plant will get large in fall/over winter with no flowering). Than in spring we have several beds on strawberries, some newly planted and some in their second year.

I will be transplanting from an existing patch and I think I will have enough to plant 4 per square. I can't remember the name but they are standard strawberries and bear quite heavily. I want to be able to put hoops over them for frost protection then replace the plastic with bird netting. John
