I would not bother with a raised bed for the raspberries unless you have poor drainage. Even temporary waterlogging can be bad news. Optimally, raspberries should get full sun, and the rows should be planted North to South, so that they get they get the morning sun on one side, and the afternoon sun on the other. But half a day of sun is okay, and they should do well. But don't put them under a tree canopy, as the trees will compete with them for water, and there will be too much shade.

I did this all around my house as ground cover. Here's a picture of the strawberries planted 1 year later. The first year I didn't pick off the blooms...I just let nature do it's thing. I put wood chips down in April and planted about 50 plants end of May. They started to spread slowly had a few berries to eat...not much. I didn't do anything to them (didn't even water). Then the following year I had so many strawberries, we couldn't harvest them all. I still haven't done anything to them. According to the BTE method you should cover them with more wood chips in the fall. I didn't, they just look so nice in December (here in New England anyways) They are have red and green leaves.....just in time for Christmas. Picture 2 (hopefully I posted the picture correctly), the bowl overflowing is what we pick 2 to 3 times per day from Father's Day until mid July. To plant strawberries in BTE garden: (I would not do a raised bed if you can help it, keep the plants as close as possible to ground level) 1. Put a layer of wood chips down ASAP (if there is grass, put craft paper or cardboard down first. The longer it's down the better. 2. Put some manure (aged manure, if you are planting soon or some blood/bone meal). 3. Pull back the wood chips a bit, if there is still cardboard under there cut a hole for the plant. Put back the wood chips. 4. Let nature do the work. If you think it needs water...check the soil first let me know if you have any questions.

I am going to guess about 2 feet should make the raspberries easy to control. They may occasionally still try to spread, but it will be easy to cut them back. If you are so concerned about keeping the raspberry patch from spreading and getting out of hand, maybe you should get the raspberry variety 'Brandywine'. It's a cross between a red and black raspberry species, and tends to stay in its place and not spread too far.

Okay, that's a good thing to have such a depth of snow protecting your strawberries from the icy winter temperatures, I agree with Mazerolm, they should be just fine! I now have about six strawberry varieties and yet have not chosen a favorite, though 'Delizz; has always performed very well with it's true everbearing qualities and most fruit being held off of the ground and yes, the flavor very good as well. 'Albion' on the other hand were nothing but a big waste of time with only giving a small sprinkling of fruit during the entire summer, then to come on strong in late September and October when frost is upon us, I worked them under after four years of wasted time and energy with a large patch dedicated to them. I later did some research to find that this variety does not do well in far north locations or high altitudes, though apparently works very well for many other places.
