Square Foot Gardening

My husband is wonderful !

He decided to build me my second 4 X 16 raised bed before planting time this spring!

Our fall delivered load of compost / dirt has finally thawed and there is not only enough to fill the one we built in the fall, there seems to be enough left over to fill the second (shorter) one we planned for the future!

Now I will have a tall bed for my short crops and a short bed for my tall crops! I should be able to fit in all the items I want without overcrowding or leaving anything out!

(Now to rearrange my plantings on paper!!!!)

When you all say lots of sun, remember that means different things in different zones. For example full sun in east Texas may not be the same as full sun in Houston (noticed this post originates from TX)... When I lived in Oregon my gigantea never flowered but put on lots of vegetative growth despite lots of sun. The first week I moved to AZ it popped flowers like a mad fiend on a shaded patio (probably heat + seasonality combined)... I have tried many growth locations and even though this is a tough bugger, it definitely appreciate some respite from the high UV index here or the segments start looking ratty despite a healthy watering regime. -Ming This post was edited by mingtea on Fri, Jun 13, 14 at 10:58

Hi Johnie, I lost my Momma in August 2008 and I cannot imagine the depth of your grief over the loss of you dear husband. I have been married to my best friend for over 25 years and I do not know what I would do without him. I am so sorry for your loss. Sometime life seems so unfair..... It's really up to what you like. I like a matching set so I would say get the matching dryer but really any dryer will do the job. If you think you would use the "steam" option then sure get it but really think about it. The "steam" option is just for freshening up fabrics. It is NOT a substitute for an iron. If you wanted to freshen up something now with your current dryer you can achieve the same results but throwing a dampened wet towel with the dry items you want to "freshen up". I personally don't see the point of a steam dryer. Best of luck and hope you get a good deal and are happy with any decision you make.

God bless you, Amber. I have 5 myself. (15, 14, 12, 11 and 9). A 3 year old is a BIG responsibility. Not that an older child is NOT but at 3, they obviously need a lot more attention and overview than a 13 year old would, who could perhaps make their own sandwich for lunch, for example. I have to agree though...what's one more? It would be a huge adjustment at first but I'm sure you would have no regrets in the long run. The child does deserve a stable life...but just to be sure, is BM unstable? I realize that she is virtually homeless at the moment and is living with Dad but that is really not an immediate reason to assume custody. Is she neglectful? On drugs, maybe? Not a good mother? Is she abusive? I'm not trying to stand up for her, but I'm just trying to understand why there is a sudden interest in taking custody of the child. If she is a good parent to the child but is going through a difficult time at the moment with coming to the end of a relationship, that isn't really an immediate cause for trying to take custody, I think. Knowing me, I've probably overlooked an explanation above somewhere...if I have and the woman is NOT a good parent, I would be 100% supportive of my DH going for custody of the child...but remember that we can't always go by the ex-boyfriend's thoughts right away. I mean, they DO have a dog in the fight and will usually only tell one side of the story. Perhaps a welfare check to her Dad's house is in order?

Mine too. He expanded my beds by another 48 SF. I printed off 4"x4" grids with 16 sf each. They are about an inch square on paper. Since I can't keep myself to one plan, I wrote the names of plants on small post-it notes and just stick them in the squares. Then when I move something, I just have to switch the post-its around. I can make notes at the bottom of the page, like dates or tips.

Ah, I use the post-it note planning too. It makes it easy to rearrange things. I'm now on my 4th or 5th version of this year's beds. If you make the post-it squares 1"x1" and scale that to 1'x1' bed square it is easy to see what you have room for. Also, if you do succession planting just put the second planting post it underneath. you can lift up the top one to see what to plant after harvesting. The next best thing to planting your beds is planning them.

That's awesome ! What a great hubby. I wish my bed could be bigger, but it is pretty maxed out for the area that gets sun (unless we take down some trees, hmmmmmm...).

What a great idea for movable squares on plans - post-its!

Should have the next bed ready by May 1. Going to have to order tomato cages -- now that I can splurge with space!

Momstar-OHH what a GREAT idea!! I have had trouble with my excel spreadsheet with successional planting. This is awesome!

Momstar - I also plan succession planting by putting the post-its underneath. I think my squares are a bit bigger than an inch. I usually have to cut the ends off the small ones but not the bottoms.
If you really want to be crazy, I also do this with clothing for travel plans.
