Winter Hardy Canadian Roses.....loads of them!!

This post is for those of you who, like me, look out your frozen window every winter and worry about the welfare of your roses. You know, the zone pushers like the Hybrid Teas and Floribundas that may or may not come back after a zone 4 or 5 winter even with your best methods of protecting. I am guilty of growing many, many less hardy roses because they're so beautiful, but sometimes its nice to have roses that you don't have to fuss so much over every winter. I do grow other hardy roses like Gallicas, Albas, Rugosas, Mosses, Damasks, Centifolias, Scotch, Species, and Buck Roses but I wanted to share some of these Canadian roses with you. When well grown they are very worthwhile and attractive roses.

I also grow QUADRA, CHAMPLAIN and WILLIAM BAFFIN but can't locate their photos at this time.

Very nice pics Celeste! I'm surprised to see how small your George Vancouver is. Mine has grown to well over 5'x5' and that's after giving it a good yearly trim! What's your opinion on Marie Victorin? Mine is two years old and I'm somewhat considering getting rid of it though I may give it another year.

I'm absolutely amazed at how healthy all the roses look. Not a single speck of blackspot!!

Good selection Annececilia and I am so glad you managed to get them as I thought you had been too late. We too are having a bizarre springerized winter that I have not experienced in 10 years ... snow is about gone over Calgary and I been wearing my cool spring coat. I am really can not fathom why Pickering offered the Canadians for one and only one year and then says final season in the first year (WTH?????). I remember being really excited about Dr. F. L. Skinner and Red Dawn which I made sure I got in the fall along with eddie's crimson and suzanne (first time in 12 years I did a fall plant). In addition they discontinued due to poor demand a lot of roses I had good luck with with protection so I decided this year to essentially buy only the "last season ones" even though I had blasted out most of my "out of zone" roses. I could not turn down getting their last 2 Prince Napoleon's that I rate up there with Louise Odier, and Mrs Baker that has one of the most attractive colors (got 3 of them) and I continued to disbelieve it is an HP and I am still convinced it is a portland ... though because of this site I learned 8 years ago it is one of the "portland HP's". And a new one to Pickering of a couple of years called Agatha Incarnata ... good cane hardiness up here for a gallica, but not 100%, blooms sloppy but I do not care. Here what was confirmed ... Why are you winter sowing? whats your plans for them?

I've got lots and lots of flower seed that I'm wintersowing this year- 37 containers so far. And at least a couple dozen more to go through the next few weeks. These are getting planted in all over the place. I have an area of the yard I call the sanctuary that I'm slowly but surely filling in with plugs of different self sowing annuals and perennials. On the other side of the sanctuary is getting filled with different types of milkweed and other butterfly and insect flowers. Some others are going into the shady area in front of the house. Still others are going into a whole bunch of different spots around the yard that I want to be able to sow once, then leave to let them do their thing. I'm trying to WS thimbleberry for the first time- I want to cultivate up a patch of it on the back 40 somewhat around where the wild blackberries are growing- and where I plan on putting in the gooseberries I've overwintered, and later, raspberries- I want a big ole area of berry picking goodness. And bramble goodness to help keep out some neighbors I'm having trouble with- they can pick on their side, and leave mine alone, lol. Later in the season will be my WS of grape hyacinths- I WS them late in the winter in their containers so I can plant them in in blocks to a border around my solarium. I've found this works better with WS than it does trying to set them in in the fall when they are supposed to be planted. WS them kind of forces them to grow a bit faster and more solid than in the ground. I've considered WS some herbs and maybe veggies- but this depends on if I still have any containers and dirt leftover from doing up all the flowers!

"That Dominion specimen looks quite like P. strobus to me, and not much like P. monticola" I don't live close enough to Ottawa to renew the photographic evidence anytime soon. I would steer skeptics to the book For the Love of Trees by Richard Hinchcliff and Roman Popadiouk. It's "A guide to the Trees of Ottawa's Central Experimental Farm Arboretum". Pages 156 to 159 describe both P. strobus and P. monticola in the arboretum's collection and include photos of cones.

Frances - I doubt not spraying has anything to do with the hardiness of the rose unless you think the rose is less healthy going into winter? My few roses die back almost to a foot high most years. I do understand if you are looking for a climber, it is so much better if they are tip hardy. And I see Captain Sam Holland is a climber. I took a look at that Felix LeClerc and it’s gorgeous. No fragrance I suppose? The photos on HelpMeFind don’t look like the photos the nurseries present. Beautiful coloring if the nursery photo is correct. John Davis is one of my favorites but because there is no fragrance at all, I have not bought one. So pretty though.

Oh Celeste---These roses are gorgeous...
The older I get the more I appreciate the value of these hardy roses-----

My garden has been sorely neglected but I'm making a note of the few that are doing well for future plantings.

Celeste, such beautiful roses and photography! Thanks for sharing. Although I'm one zone warmer, I love growing many of the easy-care hardy roses. Prairie Joy is one of my favorites - reminds me of an Austin, and reblooms nicely through the summer. Morden Sunrise is my second favorite hardy rose - such a beautiful yellow/peach blend and the fruity fragrance is amazing.

Very beautiful roses Celeste and your photos are excellent, especially catching the bee hovering over the one rose. These are all such great colors too, I do like Morden Ruby, for the bud and then the bloom.

Yes Ma'am Celeste,

For those of us in the great white north, the hardy Canadians provide some welcome roses that can be grown as climbers or just left to do their thing without fuss. I grow several, primarily as climbers where no other repeat blooming climbing roses will work. I have as climbers, John Davis, Henry Kelsey and Morden Snowbeauty. Snowbeauty is advertised as a low shrub but climbs to six or seven feet for me.

I also grow Morden Blush as a hardy, disease free, repeat blooming, old fashioned shrub rose in the same bed as the Austin, Redoute and a couple of Bucks, Prairie Star and Hawkeye Belle, all without winter protection in 4b. I would highly recommend "Blush" as a bedding, landscape or low hedge rose for zone 3 to 5 winter areas.

I am planning on getting Morden Sunrise next spring. My mom saw it 'in person' and fell in love. Where it goes... well that's for her to figure out! heehee.

I have a Winnipeg Parks and on April 22 it is fully leafed out in Colorado This is the 3rd year for it and last year was loaded with blooms all summer. My other roses are just starting to show new leaves at the ground level. Purchased another Winnipeg Parks today but am running out of places. A wonderful plant
