Suggestions on my SFG plan for my roof deck garden?

Hello all!

After lurking here for many many months, I have finally finished my plan for my vegetable "patch" on my roof deck garden.

I have been doing container gardening for years, but this is my first year with SFG.

Please let me know what you think of the vegetable plan.

As I said this is a roof deck garden, so theoretically, I could let the zuchinni sprawl on the roof. I am not sure about what to plant after the snow peas, since they will be ready by the end of June.

Looks good to me, but I wasn't sure which direction south was. Some of the plant locations seemed like they might become problematic such as zucchini on the left and cukes on the right of the bed.

As long as you are planning for shorter plants in the south and taller plants to the north you should do fine.

Thanks, justaguy2 for getting back to me.

The top left hand corner is south, so the deck faces south-west. But the roof incline starts just behind the zuchinni at about 2.5 feet high, so I am hoping finally that I will get enough sun for all my veggies!

Would you move anything around?

Wow...so much good info still coming in. Thanks :) I am going to add some buzzing friends to the mix. I have purchased, and will be making more, Mason Bee houses. Plan to put them around the deck and see if they can help with pollination a little (hopefully a lot). I won't be discouraged if things don't work out. I have been planting tomatoes in two gallon clay pots, sitting in the driveway, for three years now and they do fine. If my deck project fails, I'll go back to that. The deck is treated, and hopefully I'll do it again before I set up the deck garden this spring. I have a hot tub sunken into the deck in one corner, but I don't use it anymore. I plan to build a box over the cover and set planters on top of that. I'll do some before and after pictures and post them when I get a chance. Brody

I love the idea of a green roof and I've done a lot of research on the subject. The biggest problem is finding builders who have actual experience, not the one's who think they can build a green roof. It's pretty complicated, built right the roof will never leak! You just have to beware of the 'one small mistake' builders. The biggest surprise for me... I though a green roof would look more lush. The research has sparked a love for sedums for me. Another surprise was irrigation and weeding. I mean, a green roof is still a garden, I just never imagined myself weeding my roof. Even after all of that, I still want one. The one thing about the situation you've described is the 'nearly flat roof.' An ideal greenroof has a slope to it, allowing for good drainage. Here is a link that might be useful: Greenroof Info.

I think you're getting close on your blue bed. :) You may want to do some research on succession planting to get more variety in there. For example, cilantro does well in cooler weather and will bolt when it gets hot. So maybe you could grow it in the spring and fall, and put your basil in there during the heat of summer. That would free up an extra box for something else. Also, you've got a mix of annual and perennial herbs in the herb section; are you comfortable with keeping the perennials where they are in future years? Just something else to consider. For the green bed, you may want to do a bit more research before diving into the Three Sisters. I tried it myself in my early gardening days, to no avail, and having researched it now that I have more experience, I've learned that it's one of those things that sounds a lot better in theory than practice. But if you do want to try it anyway, just to experiment (because, after all, experimenting is half the fun :)), definitely do some more reading on corn first -- since it's wind pollinated, corn needs to be planted in large blocks. Four plants on each end of the bed won't give you much, if anything at all; you'll be wasting those eight squares. So my suggestion for the green bed is to dedicate the bulk of it to either corn OR squash, and put up a trellis on the north end of the bed for some pole beans. Good luck!

Yes corn should be planted in blocks, the NW corner would work well. The remaining tall plants should be on the north side too, including those you will trellis (cukes or other vines). The 3 sisters scheme referred to a vining (usu. winter) squash to climb the corn. My summer (yellow) squash, has huge leaves and takes up a 4x4ft box when its happy. I have squeezed 2 plants (6in. apart) in a 4x4. I wouldn't put squash on the N side, tho I have had it get 3ft high. Certainly it would provide shade for a smaller plant, but usu. stifles anything under it. You might try radishes, lettuce, or spinach will would be done before the squash shades everything. Read up on the Squash Vine Borer (SVB) so you know what is happening when the squash suddenly dies.

Hello all! It is me again with new updates from my roof deck garden.

Most everything has gone well, except for a couple of mail-order plants that didn't make it.

Questions:
The leaves on my yellow zucchini seem strange. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? I have been spraying daily with neem/tea tree oil diluted in water with a smidge of dishwashing soap to stop what I see as powdery mildew on some of the leaves, but the paper-like lighter spots all over have been there since the plant went in the ground.

Pepper hasn't established like everything else. Any ideas why?

Picking lettuce is also looking a bit meager. Did I pick too many outer leaves, or is this normal?

That papery thing just happened to me and someone told me it was likely to be sunscalding from where the spray sat on the leaves too long. Since you are spraying daily, that might be it too.
