Landscape fabric under beds?

I just built (okay, I helped my husband build) our first of several raised beds. The bed is placed on gravel and is about 10" deep on the first level with a second level that is almost 16". I really want to keep the weeds down and this area was previously really weedy so I know there are tons of seeds in my native clay soil- which is under about 3 inches of gravel. I'd like to put the weed barrier fabric under my bed before I add the soil. Has anyone else done that with good success? I should have enough depth that the stuff in the beds would be fine- I think?

Also, I am thinking of putting topsoil amended with compost in the first 5-6 inches of the bed then the Mel's mix on top. I don't want to spend the big bucks all the way through when he says you only need 6 inches of Mel's Mix. Any thoughts?

Oh, and my beds are made from scraps of Trex I bought for a great price off a local project. That's a good way to get this awesome material for a lot less than retail.
