Ahh! I planted my carrot rows to close together.
Comments (15)In his biointensive gardening book John Jeavons recommends a 3 inch spacing (in all directions) between each full sized carrot. But since you are growing 'Little Fingers' I think they would be fine at an even closer spacing like 1 inch between each carrot. I would leave the carrots just as you planted them and then thin them to a 1 inch hexagonal spacing when they are big enough to easily thin. The Square Foot Gardening method recommends 9 carrots per square foot (4 inch spacing in all directions) but to me this seems absurd unless you want big fat carrots. That may be nice for the county fair but really, who wants to eat big fat carrots? :( I think most people would prefer to eat long thin carrots. My experience has been that the bigger the diameter of the carrot the woodier and less edible the texture. Comments (11)I do have a privacy fence and also I have two trees very close to my neighbor line. I did not plant them they grew on their own. I think they are Maple or just huge green trees. They are so beautiful like drawn by an artist extending 80-90 feet tall and spreading their branches and roots in my neighbor's yard.I asked the neighbor permission to come to their yard with my ladder and chain saw. They did not mind. I trim as much as I can. It is embarrassing. I asked the Neighbor if it is a bother to them I can remove them and his wife said "No don't I love the trees you don't know how much oxygen they are producing and look how many bird nests in the trees I enjoy the singing of the birds". I planted 4 Apricot trees this year on the same side but left a good 6 feet between the trees and the fence. Even they are dwarf Apricot trees and don't grow that much I wanted to make sure they stay in my property. Some Neighbors are very cynical once I had a neighbor who used to get upset when my cat walks on his grass He moved. I am lucky now I have Good ones....See MoreHow close together can I plant the clematis?
Comments (2)Since both are group 2's, you can plant them fairly close. I like to plant mine 3 ft apart, as a general rule. If they are on a small trellis, you can probably plant them a bit closer, say 2 ft. Just remember to fertilize them well with a good rose or tomato food since they will be competing for nutrients. Comments (4)I was told that when planting in-ground that tomatoes like a minimum of 3 feet apart. I have several in containers as well. I've been told that tomatoes need a minimum of a 4 gallon container each. I'm not an expert but I hate to tell you that 3 tomatoes in one bucket sounds like bad news to me. I can only suggest that you only put one tomato in each bucket. In the end you'll be happier because you'll actually get fruit and you'll get to see the one tomato thrive rather than three tomatoes fighting for space. - as for all the extras - well you can try to get as many as possible into new pots or give them to friends and family that will take good care of them - don't dig them up until you can find them a nice home - it would be like abandoning kittens to simply dispose of them. I'll take care of them!...See More- 15 years ago
