I thought that might be the case. Brilliant was a great cultivar, and like you said had good shade performance (of course that's a relative term, as other grass types are better than the most shade tolerant KBG). This current NTEP left out the shade tolerance test, but it has run in the past two trials. You can also check the pdf brochures that the seed producers release, most of them will mention shade tolerance if it is an applicable quality. Shade tolerant KBG has been an interest of mine for a while, and I have composed somewhat of an informal list. Here is my list with the growers pdf sheet in parentheses: America, this is a cultivar that has been around for a while but still tests well in the NTEP and has dark green, fine textured blades (http://www.pickseed.com/usa/Products/PDF/america_ts.pdf). Nuglade, an improved version of the older Glade, which was a good shade KBG (http://techsheets.simplot.com/Jacklin/nuglade.pdf). Liberator, another relative of Glade (http://www.mountainviewturf.com/our-products/pdf/seed/kentucky-bluegrass/Liberator.pdf). Alpine, this one is probably better suited to cooler climates (http://www.sroseed.com/Products/PDF/alpine_TS.pdf). Orfeo, an aggressive grass that germinates quickly, this one is medium green in color (http://www.sroseed.com/Products/PDF/Orfeo_ts.pdf) A-34 or Bensun, an older medium green cultivar (http://www.gardnerturf.com/UserFiles/A-34%20Kentucky%20Bluegrass%20Spec%20Sheet%2008.pdf). There are a few others that have some shade tolerance, Nugget, Touchdown, Bristol, Eclipse, but I don't have pdfs on those. The shade trials don't agree with this list however. You can check those out at www.ntep.org. For the 2001 trials they did two shade studies, and they don't really agree with each other. For some reason NTEP doesn't really tell how much sun the grass plots receive, and the cultivars I listed don't really fall near the top of the lists, except Brilliant of course. The dense shade trial of the 1995 NTEP is one that I actually investigated and emailed to the professor who conducted it. It agrees more with the producers claims of shade tolerance. This one was " in full shade under a mature stand of primarily oak trees. Filtered light in the morning with small patches for short periods of direct light; very little direct light in the afternoon; and no direct light in the evening. The woods were much thicker to the west of the plots than to the east. There were also large trees intermixed throughout the plot area. Of course, they did get direct light from mid November through mid April when there were no leaves." This was quoted from the email from Dr. Tom Turner, who conducted the trial. Probably your best strategy is to pick three cultivars that test well in the trials and blend those in equal amounts.

When I get the Brandy Boy seeds I'll let you know the country of origin. Wal-Mart is well-known for pushing hard to get companies to pack products specifically for them that they can sell at the price they negotiate. During the last several years, the Burpee seed packs on the seed racks in Wal-Mart have had ever-decreasing seed counts. From comments posted on garden forums, it was clear that gardeners were noticing the lower seed counts and were not happy. Gone Fishin' and I both noticed the difference in Burpee tomato seed counts about 3 or 4 years ago. You could buy a packet of Burpee Porterhouse seed on-line for about $4.00 or $4.25 back then and get about 45 to 50 seeds--I don't remember the exact amount. You also could get Burpee Porterhouse on the seed rack at Wal-Mart for $1.37 a pack, but each pack only had 7 to 9 seeds. So, you actually would have spent more at Wal-Mart to get 40-50 seeds of Burpee Porterhouse. Of course, not many people want to plant 40-50 seeds of one variety in a home garden, so you could argue that the Wal-Mart Burpee seed packs were "sized-down" for the convenience of home gardeners. I noticed the same small seed counts with Burpee Highlight Zinnia on the racks at Wal-Mart either last year or the year before. I got 50 seeds in the Burpee mail-order packet for a higher price that was probably $4.00 or $4.50. Then, out of curiousity, I bought the same Burpee Highlight Zinnia (new that year) at Wal-Mart to test my theory about lower seed counts. I bought 4 packs for either $1.07 or 1.37 and each of them had 8 to 11 seeds. So, something is going on and I just wonder if Burpee got tired of selling smaller and smaller seed count packages because, if the consumer got mad about the smaller seed counts, you can bet they blamed Burpee and not Wal-Mart. It could have become a PR issue that Burpee just didn't need. There's also the possibility that F-M did commit to using U.S.-grown seed. I don't know. There's even the possibility that Burpee, which is after all a premier name in the seed industry, negotiated better deals for itself with Lowe's and Home Depot (and we don't have a K-Mart near us, but I know they've had Burpee seeds in recent years too) and that they dumped Wal-Mart. Sound far-fetched? Maybe, but it wouldn't surprise me. I ordered five packets of seeds from Stokes Seeds recently, and they just arrived the other day. Here's what I got and their nation of origin. Note that each variety had a different nation of origin: Tomato--Mountain Fresh Plus VFFN (India) Tomato--Mountain Glory VFFF/TSWV (Thailand) Watermelon--Yellow Doll (Peru) Rudbeckia--Bright Star (Germany) Liatris Spicata--Kobold (Holland) They all were stamped with the "country of origin" but then also were stamped "packed in Canada" (Stokes is a Canadian company, I think, although they have a U.S. sales branch). What does this mean? It tells me the seed companies are probably buying seeds from whichever grower in whichever country gives them the best wholesale price. Who can blame them? Would I prefer to buy only U.S.-grown seed. Of course, I would always prefer to keep jobs in the U.S. But, judging from the meager selection on the F-M racks at Wal-Mart, the number of varieties grown in the U.S for major seed companis is rather small.

Hey 908 - perhaps a bad fruiter in Florida but mine has hundreds of little guys all over the tree right now. I think it might be the diseases and such that their humidity attracts, but I certainly don't have that problem and not sure where you are, but anywhere in SoCal would be less humid than their situation, except perhaps directly on the coast. And it is my fastest grower too - I mean I can't count all the little nibbins on every branch! MDog

I built a compost bin nearby with builder's block from my FIL's old milk house built in 1929. We have a bunch more to collect from eastern Idaho. Lined it with a some newspaper, then a wet phone book someone threw into our trash can next to our shop doors and also a bag full of apples! Must have been my eldest son or my hubby. I couldn't believe my find. My 12 year old saves the phone books for his BSA camp outs. Good to start a fire with LOL So I guess he missed out on this one. WE get extra phone books from our neighbors who passes them out in the fall. One thing my son did was have the nerve to take one of the blocks from my compost bin to place under his snowmobile trailer's tongue when he got back. I did go out later at night to get the dog food bag and some more newspaper. Then in the morning, I could have gotten more newspaper, but didn't dare. I think the recycle people would be disappointed. Now I'm just going to ask her if I can collect her used paper. The dog food bag was a bust. BTW, most places have appropriate sized buckets so pick-ups can be done at the same time, yet I still have full buckets to pick-up, and I am not taking up extra space under their counter. I was going to a school meeting for my 12 year old, went through the fancy new neighborhood and saw the grounds workers cutting down tree branches and all the grasses (ornamental) and they were put in piles on the lawn later to be picked up. I made a mental note to go back and ask about the grasses. I took a different route home, but made a quick left turn into the subdivision. I asked the first guy, they are from Mexico and don't speak much English, but enough to direct me to the boss. He said fine and I offered my club wagon to put the grass into. They said "No, they wouldn't fit." I have all my bench seats in it. (I loved how they talked amongst themselves in spanish to decide about taking them to where I live which is behind the new subdivision) They actually loaded all the cut grasses and raked up leaves and put them in their truck and took them to my house and unloaded them for me. I wasn't expecting such service. They said they would just dump them anyway. So, I scored big time in the goal of getting other people's mulch and having it delivered. Where is that thread anyway?! I told them they can dump more of their grasses. They weren't done with this big subdivision and they also mow the shared grassy area and little parks. So I told them feel free to dump the grass too! When the grass gets long enough to mow. Plus I got the main guy's card to have him do some pruning and other stuff for me. I think the crew was amazed that this blonde haired lady, driving a ford clubwagon was willing to load it up with all the tall grasses! Let alone talk to them, as some people in this manicured area probably wouldn't bother speaking to them. I got there early, &, being a naturally shy & bashful person, I sat at the bar & talked to the bartender about my enthusiasm for Starbucks coffee grounds, other people's leaves, etc. Gary was the first to arrive. Gary's a hoot. He's one of those people who's always sanitizing their hands & spritzing the kitchen counter with anti-bacterial stuff. He sat down next to me just as the bartender said, "I just finished making myself a pitcher of tea. Would you like the teabag?" & I said *yes*! Of course! Thank you very much! So she put it in a sandwich bag for me. Gary eyed it & shuddered. The bartender, seeing his reaction, looked at him speculatively & said, "We roasted some peanuts in the shells earlier today for happy hour. Would you like the shells?" So she & I scooped peanut shells into my sandwich baggie as Gary made faces & shuddered. * Posted by: antic_zone9 z9FL (My Page) on Mon, Mar 15, 04 at 20:13 You know you're a compost wacko (or a wannabe) when: ...you take morning walks on trashday, pretending to be exercising, when you're really scouting the free bags of leaves. ...you walk the same route again, this time with the dog, in order not to arouse suspicion because you want to snag a beautiful closet door that will make a perfect wormbin (because of it's louvers). :) ...you don't worry about working out in a gym because you get your upper body workout by forking and turning your garbagecan compost bin. :) ...your DW is actually proud of you because of your commitment to something worthwhile (although you know she wonders about your sanity sometimes!) ;) ...you're ticked off that you can't compost plastic, because it won't break down within your lifetime, but you are happy that you are composting 60% of your garbage! ...you read composting books in the restroom and wonder if the DW would EVER let you have a composting toilet in the next house. (even if it was YOU that maintained it!) ...you subconsciously thank all of those hard-working neighbors who painstakingly rake up all of their leaves so you can steal their bags the next morning! ;) ...(this has been said before, but what the heck!) You wonder if the next occupants of the house will take advantage of the fresh composted soil for gardening that the previous owner had spent years transforming from a sandtrap. ...you think about all the OGM that is wasted daily and sleep very well that night knowing that you are doing your small part to hug the earth. * Posted by: maryslc z5-6 (My Page) on Fri, Mar 26, 04 at 23:31
