I have some potato sets of Russian banana. Small Long very tasty spuds. Dh also has health issues 2 Cancers and a mitral valve failure. Cant fix because of the cancers. Look at my list if you would like to grow a few flowers. I have herbs as well just do not have them listed. Just ask I might have it. Good Growing it IS great for your well being.

Today I just sent vacuum packs to Jesky (the original trade), Grdngramma and Fluffybonbon. I ended up picking up the shovel again and finding enough nice roots with crowns for Debi too -- and will be working on completing a trade with her on that one soon. While I was out -- I also dug up some extra root and have a nice sized pack already sealed up for ONE last trade. These roots do NOT have crowns, but they are perfectly fine for propagating. You plant them a little differently and roots will start in multiple places along each root you plant (this is why you NEVER want to rototill a horseradish patch -- every little chunks comes back another root). So if antiqueorchid wants these roots -- that cleans me out! I had posted a request to be adopted as a newbie when I first joined -- but after this flurry of trades, I don't think that will be necessary. If all goes well, I think I'll have a great start!

Joanna, I think that only a few vegetables like spinach and radishes wouldn't benefit from somewhat greater depth than that - IF you have good deep top soil. But, I doubt if 5% of gardeners bother to go deeper than 40-50 cm (~18 inches). Remember that there's something you might think of as "unkind" subsoil below your top soil. The top soil may be considerably less than 40-50 cm and you don't want to incorporate much subsoil into it. I found that double-digging a bed with a spade (something I seldom do), takes me down about 16 inches. Usually I'm preparing a bed with a spading fork with 11-inch tines and that's as deep as I go. If I remember correctly, your plan for 40-50 cm is deeper than is common in square foot gardening but I don't really use that approach. There's a GW forum for that if you'd like to check with them. In addition to Kimmsr's good points above, it's also possible that you'd be doing your plants harm. That is - sometimes when there's a LOT of one nutrient (an excess) certain other nutrients cannot be easily absorbed by a plant. I don't have examples easily at hand, and have learned about the problem chiefly from reading explanations in this forum. It seems to me that excess potash is one of those nutrients that can cause trouble though.... My sense is, if you want to use highly concentrated stuff (synthetics or specialized organics), you want a soil test - and that can be a great idea when things aren't growing well. But adding organic material (compost and compostables) will also fix a lot of troubles, and is helpful regardless of the soil test feedback.
