Here are a couple other questions: Have you done a GW search during the last few weeks for a fairly current posting that you could not quite locate?? There seems to be a real lag time for the GW search engine to store things. A couple times I've had to go back a page or two and find something that the official GW search claimed wasn't there. Older posts are covered unless they've run out of pages. Something a month or so ago, wasn't searchable. And here's something else - - How come some folks have capitals in their nicknames now??? I lost my "capital D" about 2 or 3 years ago and noticed that everyone else did as well. Thought it was all pretty much okay and rather democratic - uh, "small letter d." Steve's digits

I suppose I could do bush beans when the peas are done and forget the trellis entirely, because I know they don't take as long, but I do love my pole beans. I grow them every year and the neighbors love them too, since I usually have enough to share. The space where the deer ate the other peas doesn't really have a support tall enough for the pole beans, but I could rig something I suppose. Of course, there's still the deer issue. That space is actually a clothesline pole (abandoned) in my yard, while the garden area is closer to the house and the critters think that middle of the yard area is their own private buffet. Perhaps I'll try both? Plant beans where the deer ate the peas and down among the peas in the garden area. That way I'll get them somewhere - and maybe more than I need.

Beans ( P. vulgaris) and peas (pisum sativum) or (Vigna unguiculata) do not have high nutrient requirements. Like most fruiting plants an excess of nitrogen leads to excessive plant growth and inhibits blossoming. Result, huge vines with little fruit. Phosphate is the more critical. With most soils if a fertilizer is needed something with an N-P-K ratio of 1-2-1 is sufficient. These are legumes with the ability to fix nitrogen from the air.

Beans are a poor choice for early seeding as they will need warmer soil to germinate. Peas of all types are a much better choice since you can actually sow in late fall and the seeds will germinate at first favorable conditions. Some people have used hairy vetch but you need to be prepared to knock it down. Your 90 day window is too extreme since many peas are able to be harvested in 60d; 40-50d to manage and replant.
