I'd like to request a new forum specifically on LIGHTING. Lighting is a broad subject with wide appeal. In the absence of a dedicated lighting forum, members have posted threads on lighting in forums associated with their particular needs. For instance, many threads on recessed lighting have appeared in the Kitchen forum. For someone in the middle of a home construction, that is the last place to expect discussions on recessed lighting, which is installed throughout the house these days. But then I was told that many recessed lighting "experts" hang around the Kitchen forum, so someone posting a question in the Building a Home forum could not get a lively response.

Lighting is much more than recessed lighting of course. You have interior vs exterior, wall vs ceiling, recessed vs flush, utility vs decorative, pendent vs chandelier, etc. etc. A LIGHTING specific forum would facilitate the discussion of all these topics and more.

I think that's a great idea. I learned a lot from the lighting discussions on the Kitchen forum, but it was a struggle to get information on lighting the rest of the house, not to mention the outside.

It would be particularly useful if the Lighting Forum was included in the "related forums" links for Building a Home, Remodeling, Bathroom, Kitchen, Laundry Room, etc., etc.

I agree. It's hard to find lighting advice unless it's in the kitchen forum.

A lighting forum would be great!

Thanks for responding. The hardware will change, but I am waiting until everthing else is done. We want something on the light cabinets that will complement but not be exact to whatever we decide to put onto the island. The island will have a black, silgranite sink and rubbed bronze faucet. Work space size - from cooktop counter edge to island counter edge is 5.5 feet. From oven counter edge to frig is 13 feet. I don't know the maker of the existing light and I can't find pendants to match, so I may have to replace it, too. We will drop it lower to the table, but we have to keep it high now because my husband kept bumping his head with it not being centered. Pricing? Our current bid is for 3,400 to do what I have described above. does that sound reasonable for the Midwest? He is supplying everything but the pendants. PS - thanks for any input. I discovered this wonderful group of experts just recently and I have been reading and taking notes. We have never updated a kitchen before.

We just put in 4 inch recessed in our Family room and the bulbs that I found were 45 Watt or 40 watt halogen that burn at 40 but give off the light of a 75 watt bulb. Four inch might be a little small to give proper lighting in your kitchen. We are planning to use five inch in the kitchen per our contractor

vwhippie, the corbels would make it too gingerbready IF you use gingerbready corbels. The door with its woodwork gives what is a very simple exterior the heft and interest it needs, esp. with those beautiful tall windows on the first floor. Adding somewhat simple, "farm-housey" corbels would beautifully carry the whole porch with what the door does and balance it out. As for the old house thing, never say never until the pro says it can't be done. As I said, there has to be an electrical box in that wall for the light you've got. An electrician can tell you if a pendant light can be wired to that box. If not, it can't. But the age of the house has nothing to do with this particular subject. As I said, my house is 1880. I just added an outdoor lamp because when I bought the house, there was a three-bay window in this wall that had rotted out, including the wall, and it made sense to put glass sliding doors in there, so I did. But it's needed an exterior lamp. I finally had an onion lamp installed a few weeks ago. It was a piece of cake. He just drilled a hole, and wired the lamp to the box that is in the wall. FYI: I was with a couple of kids, a 16 year old girl and 12 year old boy, and I showed them the pics, didn't say one word about who was proposing what. Showed them the pics, and then asked them which new light situation they thought was best. The girl I asked first (boy wasn't even around) and she said the pendant light. The boy actually said, "I"d put a light in the middle" as soon as I showed him just the photo of your front door and hadn't even shown him any of the mockups or even said anything about anything. So he also saw the pendant light right away. Genius kid! Lol.

Long story short, the only way I could get a bigger kitchen is to expand into my existing breakfast room with a vaulted ceiling. That room is currently lit by the ugly fixture you see here with 6 120v 60w candelabra bulbs (3480 lumens total). The fixture emits light in all directions. The lighting is adequate. Planned lighting for this same area includes: 1) uplighting over the cabinet (I think it is the same led lighting as our undercab lights so 375 lumens). 2) undercab lighting 375x2 = 750 lumens 3) sconce on wall just out of frame to the right in the photo. Most we are looking at use a 60w halogen for about 830 lumens. 4) 2 20w 12v halogens in range hood over cooktop (320 lumens each). 5) 3 pendants over peninsula. I really like some monorail pendants that use 12v 35w xelogen bulbs (525 lumens each). My husband thinks we need to use a larger midi pendant that takes 100w incandescent bulbs to make sure we have enough light. Asthetically speaking, I don't like the fixtures we would have to use or the pendants nearly as much, but I don't want this part of the kitchen to be dark. During the day, we get some sunlight from western exposure bay window. If I just add up the lumens, it seems to be ample light, but some of the light is shooting straight down to the black countertop. I am hoping the uplight and wall sconce will bounce some light off of that vaulted ceiling to help the overall space appear brighter. What do you think?

Ditto was written above. We need a lighting forum. Topics should span the spectrum from indoor lighting to outdoor landscape lighting.

I like the idea too. It is looking like we might build a home in the near future and not having to search through different forums for info would be great.

I'd love a lighting forum. I've learned so much about kitchen lighting in the kitchen forum, but I really don't know how to apply it to the rest of the house.

As they say, the difference between a decorator and a designer is lighting!

With lighting evolved to a sophisticated level, i think it deserves a separate forum. our home started with 8" square, dull, dim recessed lights from the 60s. no wall or ceiling lights in the bedrooms. now we are adding a variety of recessed lights, sconces, lamps, rope lights etc.

One of the more challeging aspects of building our house was coming up with a lighting plan. I remember how many questions there were in the Kitchen, Building A Home, and Electrical forums on lighting. It is a huge area. Please count my vote for a separate lighting forum.

Yes, there are big changes in lighting.
I am putting in solar outdoor yard lights and will be changing indoor lighting.

It makes a whole lot of sense to have the lighting information in one forum, rather than scattered about in several venues. I really hope this will happen.

It's there! And it shows up as a new forum on the Kitchens and Bathrooms Forums pages (and everywhere else probably but I didn't check).

Great...now maybe I can come up with lighting solution for my galley kitchen, that has a huge florescent in it. What was I thinking?

Yes! Another vote for this forum. I am renovating an older house and have a question on what the standard is for mounting sconces near (or over?) a fireplace mantel.
