I'd like to request a new forum specifically on LIGHTING. Lighting is a broad subject with wide appeal. In the absence of a dedicated lighting forum, members have posted threads on lighting in forums associated with their particular needs. For instance, many threads on recessed lighting have appeared in the Kitchen forum. For someone in the middle of a home construction, that is the last place to expect discussions on recessed lighting, which is installed throughout the house these days. But then I was told that many recessed lighting "experts" hang around the Kitchen forum, so someone posting a question in the Building a Home forum could not get a lively response.

Lighting is much more than recessed lighting of course. You have interior vs exterior, wall vs ceiling, recessed vs flush, utility vs decorative, pendent vs chandelier, etc. etc. A LIGHTING specific forum would facilitate the discussion of all these topics and more.

I think that's a great idea. I learned a lot from the lighting discussions on the Kitchen forum, but it was a struggle to get information on lighting the rest of the house, not to mention the outside.

It would be particularly useful if the Lighting Forum was included in the "related forums" links for Building a Home, Remodeling, Bathroom, Kitchen, Laundry Room, etc., etc.

I agree. It's hard to find lighting advice unless it's in the kitchen forum.

A lighting forum would be great!

We just put in 4 inch recessed in our Family room and the bulbs that I found were 45 Watt or 40 watt halogen that burn at 40 but give off the light of a 75 watt bulb. Four inch might be a little small to give proper lighting in your kitchen. We are planning to use five inch in the kitchen per our contractor

I think the thing that would give you the most light would be track lighting. There are some nicer looking styles out there nowadays and even the plain kind has smaller heads than they used to so is less obtrusive.

The two cans on the fridge wall should be centered on their respective appliances, IMO. If you have two small cans above the sink, you don't need the large can directly overhead. Instead, I'd put one centered on DW, other one equidistant on the right of sink, like at the corner. If you feel up to it, how about one can above those double doors to illuminate that "path"? Never consider that the ceiling symmetry matters for anything, unless you are doing a full grid of lites, where they form ranks and files. Kitchen lights are task/area/feature oriented. Casey

ebean - I love the holophone pendants - we put a larger one over my sink and I think it looks lovely. It throws light up and down, as well has the slight glitter effect versus the opaque schoolhouse. I like that it is old style yet the use in the kitchen feels new. The fixture/bar drops 24" plus the glass itself, but you can get a shorter bar but I think the 24" works in my nine foot ceiling over the sink. Here it is before we hung it. I can take and post a photo of it installed if it will help you. Here is a nice photo from the website It can be either ORB, polished nickle or satin nickle trim. The trim is more substantial than the smaller RH one, but unfortunately it is more expensive as well ($500ish) - and with the RH sale going on right now. But scale with lighting is really important so you might want to pull out your balloons and hang to see. But either size I think they will look lovely and special. Ditto was written above. We need a lighting forum. Topics should span the spectrum from indoor lighting to outdoor landscape lighting.

I like the idea too. It is looking like we might build a home in the near future and not having to search through different forums for info would be great.

I'd love a lighting forum. I've learned so much about kitchen lighting in the kitchen forum, but I really don't know how to apply it to the rest of the house.

As they say, the difference between a decorator and a designer is lighting!

With lighting evolved to a sophisticated level, i think it deserves a separate forum. our home started with 8" square, dull, dim recessed lights from the 60s. no wall or ceiling lights in the bedrooms. now we are adding a variety of recessed lights, sconces, lamps, rope lights etc.

One of the more challeging aspects of building our house was coming up with a lighting plan. I remember how many questions there were in the Kitchen, Building A Home, and Electrical forums on lighting. It is a huge area. Please count my vote for a separate lighting forum.

Count me in too! While not building, I am busy updating/improving my 1950's split, and a lighting forum would be a wonderful help.

Yes, please! We are building a new home and lighting is one of our biggest challenges. I have been 'lurking' on the building, kitchens, etc. forums.

Yes, there are big changes in lighting.
I am putting in solar outdoor yard lights and will be changing indoor lighting.

It makes a whole lot of sense to have the lighting information in one forum, rather than scattered about in several venues. I really hope this will happen.

Great...now maybe I can come up with lighting solution for my galley kitchen, that has a huge florescent in it. What was I thinking?

Yes! Another vote for this forum. I am renovating an older house and have a question on what the standard is for mounting sconces near (or over?) a fireplace mantel.
