Vermiculite Scavenger Hunt

Ok...The vermiculite scavenger hunt is getting old. I found a couple of places today that will order it for me. I do have a question about price though.

I found 2 nurseries literally less that a city block from each other. One very pleasant, perky lady said she'd be happy to order it for me at the cost of about 27 dollars for a 4 cubic foot bag. The other was an elder, Asian man who said he'd charge me 16 dollars a bag. I'm not 100 percent sure he understood me all the time but I like the price. He did say that he had one bag at the nursery now so I guess I'll go and have a look and make sure it actually is coarse vermiculite before I have him order 10 bags for me.

If anyone knows of anyplace I can just go and pick it up for a reasonable price, I'm up to the drive. I live in Ft. Worth and drive to Irving for work and most of my family live East Texas. So I get around.

I buy my vermiculite & perlite from Lowe's home improvement store. The bags are approx. 3 quarts, for about $4.00. I mix both with peat moss, & Voila! Great Seed starting mix! Hope you can find a Lowe's near you!

I bought six 4 cubic ft. bags yesterday for $16.78 in eastern Iowa.
I called all over and some were as high as $28 so I think the $16 could
be right.

Since you're making a wooden top, wouldn't you be able to use the folding legs with the moving pair that have the metal going across, which the clamps hooked on to, if you screwed a piece of quarter round or another small strip of wood along the edge of the far side of the tray, that the cross bar could sit against? It wouldn't be clamped in place, as with the thin original trays, but you'd seldom knock the tray hard enough that it would dislodge the metal crossbar from the wooden strip along the edge of the tray, I think. ole joyful

I too had problems finding the quantity of vermiculite I needed, 2 cubic yards worth, or thirteen 4 c. ft. bags. My local nursery only had 5 at $28 each. So I called a nursery way up north about an hour drive away. They didn't carry big bags, but when I asked if they knew where I could get them, they suggested their supplier. I called them and they had 200 bags at $14.50 each. Score!

So I recommend calling around, and if they don't carry it, ask if they know who might. Keep calling until some kind soul finds it for you. Wholesale/retail outlets appear to be the best bet if you can find one near you.

I found a nursery in Lexington, KY that can order a 4-cu bag for around $18, but would have to add it onto their store's regular supplies order to their distributor, so it will take 3-4 weeks before my bag arrives with their order. Posting for price-comparison reasons. :)

Vermiculite is not a native mineral to Kentucky. According to a book picked up with a google search, the mineral distribution for its deposits occur in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Pennyslvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Wyoming.

..just in case any curious minds wonder where this mineral is concentrated and mined for commercial\industrial uses. :)

Unfortunately the source I mentioned for my area said their original supplier doesn't have it and the source they use now charges about $25 for around 4cu (or was it $25 for 2cu?, guess I need to call and confirm). Ouch!

I found my supply - finally - at a Feed Store - 40 miles from home. Bonus! Happens to deal in organic seeds, plants and the like. 4 cu. bag for $20. Mixed with 1/3 each of peat and compost, it nearly filled a 6"deep 3 ft.x 8 ft. box. FYI - also found a Hydroponic supply store in my area, carried it in smaller quantities, and proportionaly bigger price. Can't tell you how many phone calls to other places where they assured me it was in stock, when I got there it was Perlite. If you haven't done your Mel's Mix yet, mixing the three on a big tarp wasn't that awful. Misting with water helped a lot. Good Luck everybody!

You can get 4 cu ft bags of course vermiculite in Sante Fe, Texas for $15 per bag. Sante Fe is about 20 miles inland from Galveston.

I bought Sun-Gro Coarse Vermiculite at Marshall Grain Company last week. They usually have it in stock but call first. I paid $19.99 for 4 cubic feet. It's right in Fort Worth! Check the website link for address and phone number.
