Two Suggestions Here

The first is a request for an edit button for my own posts. Sometimes I forget to say something a few minutes after I post and there is nothing I can do. I can post again if I change the subject title, but how weird is that?

Secondly, since you use cookies anyway, how about something on the home page, or at least the main forum page that tells me which threads have been replied to. If you supply a link, all I have to do is click and there I am.

It would make GW SO much user friendly.

Hi Pins,

Unfortunately, an editing feature is not feasible at this time due to the nature of the software that is used for GW. It would be a very handy tool and is something that is on our wish list for the future.

For your second request, we just launched a new feature that will help you keep track of your own posts -- as well as other posts that might be of interest to you. It's called My Clippings and can be found at: http://www.gardenweb.com/clippings/

You'll be able to clip posts as you read them, saving them into your own area. You can choose to make them public or keep them private. I think you'll really like it.

Every time I try to clip, I get this:

Sorry, I had a whole long post typed out this morning, went to submit it, and my computer froze...lost it all! Hope I can recreate most! I'd LOVE evergreens! Two I really like....the creeping wintergreen, but I hear it doesn't spread fast at all. But I LOVE the foliage, and the berries. LOVE IT! I also am in love with harbor belle nandina, but it's a zone 6 plant, and so I'm just suffering with zone envy there. I don't know if, since it's a protected area, it would still work.... the majority of our weather/wind comes from the west, and the door faces north, with the planting bed pictured facing east. If it was a perfect world, I'd have either one of those, a nice lush bed of it, planted there. Both evergreen. Linda, it is a pyramid arborvitae. Could you tell me what problem I will encounter? Just size? In which I could prune it... or will I be facing problems with the root system with the concrete? I actually have two, one on the other side of my garage door as well. I've never been told this before! The ground squirrels, I have them digging insanely within my foundation plantings....it's making me crazy! This morning there were two fronds laying on the ground from one of my japanese painted ferns. They are stirring up all of the mulch, they are living, I believe, under my concrete front porch. The bed pictured has since been cleaned out completely, but there is a rock in there, large and flat, for decoration. I moved that out of the way last evening to see a criss-cross of tunnels underneath. THIS. IS. WAR. As far as the downspout....when the sidewalk was put in, a PVC pipe was put in underneath it. But nothing on the other side. I suppose we could dig it up and put in some gravel for drainage? So it's unused now, but there if we DO do something...I just wasn't sure what to do, but the pipe under the sidewalk before it was poured seemed like a good idea to me at the time. So we did. I appreciate the opionions....and I do believe I will look into this pachysandra, I've not heard of it! I saw a dwarf dogwood groundcover in some catalog I liked...and seem to remember it might have been evergreen as well. But Linda, do fill me in more on your thoughts on my arborvitaes. I love them, love the looks...but I will be facing problems in teh future? Thanks!!

sort of off topic - using leftover rice for birds

I feed leftover white rice (or brown) to our chickens. I don't let it dry--just give it to them as it comes off our plates. I don't think it would be harmful to birds since the chickens love it and it does them no harm. It will attract ants, etc. if left out very long, so perhaps you might want to put out a little bit to get eaten up before the pests find it.

Great comments! Keep them coming. I like the idea of pull- outs in the pantry. Sounds like it may be better than having a walk in. You are all giving me something to think about. Yes, the built-in buffet was an add-in that we requested due to limited storage space. And I agree it looks like it was just kind of stuck in there. I will be having my cabinets custom made so I am hoping to make it look better when done. I could recess the refrigerator back into the wall, but will that impinge on the entry space from the garage? I am afraid to open up the the den/kitchen area too much as I will lose some important cabinet spaces. I currently do not have a walk in pantry in my own home but we love our shallow depth (recessed in) wall cabinet. I open it up and can find everything. Although, my bulky items do have to go in a small hall closet. If I were to open up the space between the two rooms, how would that open up more design options? All I see with that would be open air with lost cabinet spaces. I think I would rather have more cabinet space. As for our broken-up design. I like a Traditional home. I currently live in one. I like having private more quiet spaces. Believe it or not I recently had a young family couple call us who found out I will be putting this house on the market soon. They are looking for a less open home to buy due to the noise factor of their current open design. The LR and DR were designed for pocket doors to keep out my animals when I am not using them. These will be glass pocket doors to allow light and open up the space visually. I can't stand that my cats and dog now have access to both rooms and lay all over my DR table and LR furniture. I will be having all wood floors with Oriental rugs so I don't think I will have to worry about my carpets going bad. There will only be two of us living in this home. We will be living on the main floor. The majority of our square footage is actually on the first floor. The home looks much bigger than it is going to be. The left end of the home that you don't see (couldn't fit it on my scanner) will have a MBR suite with a large walk-in closet and an additional second master (exercise room) with a separate full bath. The second floor is separated. The bonus storage space (not to be finished) over the garage can only be accessed through the laundry room. We can not have a basement due to the high water table where we will be moving. There will be two bedrooms upstairs sharing a Hollywood bath and a sitting area above the library. This area has two staircases that access it. One from the library stairs and the central staircase.

I agree a photo of the kitchen space is helpful. Also what you are looking to achieve. Do you need seating? if not, you could have an island without an overhang and stools if you just need more counter space. If you just want to visually open the space, removing the upper portion of the wall may be enough. If I were you I would go to a kitchen design center. They should be able to put your measurements in and provide you with some renderings to visualize these options. Keep in mind that furniture is easy to move and rearrange (or swap out).

About this clippings feature...was this something requested by forum members? I have played around with it and it just does not seem that useful. Every once and a while there is a post that has a lot of good information, but most of the time individual posts lose their meaning when taken out of the context of the thread. I would love to be able to watch threads and easily tell when follow post were made (the email feature does not fit my needs and it can only be used when I am the one that started the thread). Maybe the clippings thread could be expanded so you could clip entire threads.

Also, it seems rather difficult to get to the clippings page. Is there a link that I am missing?

There is a lot I learn here, and don't want to trust a lot of it to my poor memory.

To see your clippings, click on your name, go to your page, and then click on clippings. To get there quickest, you might want to save your member page, or your clippings page to your Favorites.

To see the entire thread, just go to your clipping page, and click on the title of the post. It will bring up the OP and all replies

I just used the clipping feature yesterday for the first time. I saw two posts that I wanted to save the answer(s) from for later on storing plants. I was about to put them in my bookmarks and then noticed the option to clip, so I did.

The coolest part was that one post was a tutorial with pictures and I was expecting just the text to be saved but it even saved the pics. Now I just hope the person never moves the pics and breaks the link. LOL.

With the clippings I'll be able to slim down the amount of bookmarks I use for GW.

mrbrownthumb, check the thread on edit/delete with is currently nearby. It would appear that the things you clip will age off. If you really, really want to keep them indefinately you may want to email them to yourself.

Well, since I usually have WORD open (especially if posting from work), I just cut & paste it into a WORD file & keep that in dedicated folder (on home computer or work) works just fine for me. You folks might want to try it.

I've heard folks say this is too cumbersome or they don't like doing it, but as a word processor of 18+ yrs., I think nothing of keeping several windows open & clicking btwn the 2.

I do the same thing pirate girl. I have word and wordpad down on my bottom tool bar and it is so easy to cut and paste and save!!
