Proposal for a 'Legumes' Forum

This thread proposes the creation of a new Garden Web forum devoted to legumes. The idea was first presented one week ago in Vegetable Growing, Heirlooms and Harvest because those are the existing forums where there has been a significant interest in beans. Input from members of those forums has been collected during the past week and is summarized in this thread.

Initially, the suggestion was for a forum about beans. It was quickly pointed out that legumes would be a more appropriate subject than just beans. Beans and other legumes come in many species, many growth habits, many culinary uses and untold number of varieties. Like heirloom tomatoes, seeds of heirloom legumes are easily saved by the home gardener. Legume varieties have been passed down in families for generations. Legume collectors have large numbers of varieties. This is different from, say, carrots, lettuce and radish.

So, given the richness of the subject and given the depth of interest shown over the past week, it is now proposed that a Garden Web forum called "Legumes" be created. Garden Web has forums for tomatoes, hot peppers and alliums, all of which are diverse, versatile vegetables having followings of serious, as well as casual, aficiandos. Legume growing is an area of horticulture which offers equally large opportunities for exploration and learning.

The following are just a few of the topics which can be expected to come up for discussion in the new forum. There are many, many more.

pole beans

edamame (soy)

Southern peas

butter beans

cow peas

long beans

shellies

limas

seivas

rice beans

runner beans

greasy beans

cut shorts

snap peas

pea shoots
