Square Foot Gardening

Has anyone ever taken the correspondence course offered through the official SFG site the Certified Teacher program. Has any gardening club or group ever expressed an interest in having a "certified teacher" talk. Are fees charged for this kind of presentation? There is not much offered in my neck of the woods in terms of a gardening course and I was looking for some feedback.

I have heard of the courses before. Early in my blog experience I was approached about teaching those courses. At the time it seemed interesting, but I was such a newbie that I thought it ludicris that I would teach the course.

I haven't heard about it since.

Most of your county extensions offer master gardener classes at reduced cost or even free. While not a square foot class, it would definitely help in gardening. I do not see what could be taught in the class that can't be learned here or through experience.

Don't worry. If you run out of room, just pull out the under-performing plants and forge ahead. One zuke is more than enough for a family of four for fresh eating and it'll start producing long before it gets huge. You can always succession plant -- so when the one zuke gets bigger and production starts to taper off, the replacement is getting big enough to flower. There's also a climbing zuke that likes growing in containers, but I haven't tried it. When I lived in California and had a small patio, I gardened square foot style. Most everything grew with precision and exactly as the books and web sites say. In Alabama? I think there's steroids in the dirt. I get monsters here. I experimented with small melon plants last year, and Minnesota Midget really does live up to the description but all the melons ripened at once and then the plant died. I got 5 4-5" melons off a tiny little plant with a couple of 4' vines, though. This year I am trying a reportedly smaller zuke plant (cocozelle) and smaller winter squash varieties. I have lots of room but the BF doesn't eat many veggies and I need smaller portions!

I find that it truly depends on the soil make up available. My best growing beds are my existing soil with my compost. They hold the moisture better than the Mel's mix. So I would say What soil do you have? Mel's Mix is surly better than any of the new suburban wasteland soil I have been around. I would do without the Pete moss, but that is a personal opinion based on my soil type and compaction problems. Curt

Well said justaguy2. I suggest not screwing and unscrewing if you don't have to. You'll increase longevity if you just leave as is. The frame won't be that heavy at all. As for holes, not sure, maybe someone will have a suggestion. Off the top of my head I'd say an ice pick or something that wouldn't turn into a "rip" if that would even happen, maybe Xs would be fine with a knife. If you do line with no bottom, consider corner drainage instead of directly in the bottom center area. Maybe you could even build the box, line the box, fill with soil, and then drill some holes in the sides along the bottom. Just an idea... Sounds like all you need to do is get started!

You could create your bed in a U-shape so you have easier access to the compost bin for the keyhole garden part.

I would love a master gardener course but I live up in Canada and county extensions don't exist. Some Universities and community colleges offer 2-3 year diploma or degree landscaping/horticulture courses with the intent of making you into an urban greenskeeper, botanist or something else, but this is not what I am looking for. I also live out in the country so I would like something by correspondence or distance learning.

Rita, I know that OSU is offering a master gardeners course through their extension online. I think part of the requirement to get the mg is volunteer time, but West Coasters are pretty flexible. If you sent them a note, they just might let you sit in on the online course.
